Field experiments were carried out in Ganges Tidal Floodplain soils of Rahmatpur, Barisal during 1993-94 and 1994-95 to find out the yield response of cowpea to chemical fertilizers and organic manure (cowdung). Number of pod/plant, number of seed/pod and 1000-seed weight progressively increased with increasing rate of chemical fertilizers and organic manure without showing any significant differences over control. The results showed that all the treatments gave significantly higher seed yield of cowpea over control. Maximum economic seed yield of 1.275 t/ha (average of two years) was obtained with the treatment combination of N15P35K25 kg/ha providing gross margin of Tk. 19817 /ha and having the highest marginal rate of rerum (330%).

To study the effect of Chemical fertilizers and organic manure on cowpea production in the Ganges Tidal Floodplain soils of Bangladesh.

Soil was collected at a depth of 0-15 cm from different spots of experimental field before establishing the experiments and the sample was analyzed in the laboratory for chemical properties as per ASI method. Pot experiment was carried out in greenhouse as per ASI method. Five hundred grams of soil were taken in the green plastic pots and placed on black plastic reservoirs containing demineralized water (for no nitrogen and control treatment) and 0.03% NH4N03 solution (for other treatments). There were 14 treatments replicated three limes. Except for N and Mo, the predicted optimum treatment (T1) and other treatments were made as per soil analytical data and sorption studies. Treatments T2 to T13 having the same additions of the elements as treatment T1 except for the element being tested. itrogen was added at the rate of 50 mg/ml soil. Calcium and Magnesium were applied as powder form while the other elements were added in the form of solution. After mixing the nutrients thoroughly, the seeds of sorghum were sown. Seven days after germination, eight plants were allowed to grow in each pot. Irrigation water was supplied through an uncut cigarette filter that served as capillary between green pots and plastic reservoirs. Plants were harvested at 2 cm above the soil surface after six weeks of sowing seeds. The harvested plants were then dried placing on an oven at 65°C and the dry matter yield was recorded treatment wise. Based on soil test values and pot culture data, the field experiments were conducted Juring the rabi season of 1993-94 and 1994-95 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal. The soil of the experimental field belongs to Ganges Tidal Floodplain (Series: Mirpur). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with six treatments replicated three times. The description of the treatments is stated. One predicted optimum treatment (POT) was made on the basis of Soil test values and pot culture trial data for high yield goal and other five treatments were used for comparison of the results. The unit plot size was 6mx4m. In both the years, cowpea seeds were sown on second week of December maintaining a pacing of 40 cm (Line to line) and 15 cm (Seed to seed). All Fertilizers and cowdung as well as 1/2 N were applied at the time final land preparation and the remammg in N was applied as topdresed 35 days after sowing the seeds. Irrigation and other cultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on the third week of April in both the years after attaining full maturity. The yield contributing characters and seed yield of cowpea were recorded and analyzed statistically. Duncan's Multiple Range Test was used for mean separation. Partial budget and marginal analysis of cost undominated fertilizer responses were done. The per unit input and output prices were considered.

The maximum marginal rate of return (330%) and the gross margin (Tk. 19817/ha) obtained with the treatment combination of 15:35:25 kg/ha of N:P2O5:K2O, respectively was found to be the most profitable for the production of cowpea in Ganges Tidal Floodplain Soils of Barisal.
