The research work was carried out to investigate the effect of oral hypoglycaemie drugs on some haemato-biochemieal parameters in mice. Out of four groups of mice (each containing 5 mice), one group was kept as control without giving any drug and other three groups of mice received separately acarbose ( @ 60 mg/kg b.wt), gliclazide (@ 64 mg/kg b.wt.) and glibenclamide ( @ 16 mg/kg b.wt) orally along with normal feed. The blood glucose level was decreased significantly (P<0.01) in all three treated groups. The total erythrocyte count (TEC) and haemoglobin (Hb) content were decreased significantly (P<0.01) in all three treated groups. On the other hand, total leukocyte count (TLC) was significantly (P<0.01) increased following administration of these three drugs. In case of differential leukocyte count, monocyte and eosinophil count was decreased significantly (P<0.01) in all treatment groups whereas lymphocyte count was increased significantly (P<0.01) in all treatment groups. The neutrophil count was decreased signiticantly (P<0.01) in acarbose treated group only but increased in other two treated groups. It may be concluded that oral administration of hypoglycaemic drugs not only reduce the blood glucose level but also have some variable effects on baematological parameters in mice.

To study the effects of 3 different preparations of oral hypoglycaemic drugs i.e. acarbose, gliclazide and glibenclamide on blood glucose level and also on haematological parameters i.e. TEC, TLC, Hb, DLC in mice.

The research work was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, for a period of 70 days (Ist August, 2001 to 9th October, 2001) to study the effects of administration of oral hypoglycaemic drugs in mice. Eight weeks old 20 Swiss albino mice weighing between 25 and 35 gram were collected from the animal rearing section of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh, Mohakhali, Dhaka. After procurement of mice from ICDDR, B, all the mice were kept under close observation in order to acclimatize to the new environment for a period of one week prior to commencement of the experiment. All the mice were maintained on good housing condition and were divided randomly into 4 equal groups containing 5 mice in each group. The groups were designated as group A, B, C and D of which group A was kept as control without giving any treatment. Three oral hypoglycemic drugs i.e. acarbose (Gluco - A 50®, The Acme Laboratories Ltd.), gliclazide (Cornprid®, Square Pharma. Ltd.) and glibennclamid (Glucotab®, Fisons Bangladesh Ltd.) were used in the present study. Four types of rations (Feed) designated as ration I. 2. 3 and 4 were used in the experiment in which ration 1 was control diet or basal ration. Ration 2. 3 and 4 were basal diet plus acarbose. basal diet plus gliclazide and basal diet plus glibenclamide respectively. Mice of group A were fed control diet or basal ration. Mice of group B were fed basal ration along with acarbose (60 mg/kg b.wt ) (ration 2). Mice of group C were supplied basal ration along with gliclazide (64 mg/kg b.wt.) (ration 3). Mice of group D were fed basal ration along with glibenclamide (16 mu/ku b.wt.) (ration 4). Blood glucose level were recorded on day 0 (pre treatment) and on 7th, 21st , 42nd and 70th day of experimental period (70 days) by the help of Glucose meter (Glucotrend). Haematological parameters were determined on day 0 (pre treatment) and on the 70th day by the standard method. The data were analyzed stat ist ically using Completely Randomized Design.
