A study was conducted for a period of 90 days to find out the level of protein required for fattening the local bull calves of Bangladesh. The treatments included three protein levels viz. NRC standard (0.36 kg d-1 animal-1), 20% below NRC standard (i. e. 0.29 kg protein d-1 anima-1) and 20% above N RC standard (i. e. 0.43 kg protein d-1 anirnal-1). Results showed that total feed consumption and daily dry matter intake increased with the increase in the level of protein. Feed conversion ratio slightly increased due to increase in protein level from 20% below NRC standard to NRC standard while further increase resulted in poor conversion. Digestibility of nutrients did not vary significantly due to variation in protein levels. The rate of daily live weight gain also did not show any significant variation. The benefit-cost ratio was the highest in the ration having protain level 20% below NRC standard which was followed by the NRC standard and 20% above NRC standard. From the findings it was concluded that protein level 20% below the NRC standard (0.29 kg protein d-1 anlmal-1) could be successfully used for computing fattening ration for local bull calves.

To search an economically feasible ration for fattening local bull carves.

The study was carried out in the Animal Nutrition Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment was started on December 12, 1987 and continued for a period of 90 days. Nine local bull calves were randomly selected for the study from the herd of Animal Nutrition Section. The experimental calves were approximately two years old with an average body weight of 85 kg. They were divided into three groups. Each group contained three animals. The animals were assigned through Completely Randomized Design. This was done to make the groups nearly equal in average weights. The faeces of all animals were examined for parasitic infestation. Systamex was given for dewormind animals. Similar housing and management practices were followed for all groups. The experimental calves were randomly assigned to three different treatments as follows: (i) 20% less protein lever of NRC standard (i. e. 0.29 kg protein d-1 animal-1). (ii) Protein level of NRC standard ( i. e. 0.36 kg protein d-1 animal-1). (iii) 20% above protein level of NRC standard ( i. e. 0.43 kg protein d-1 anlmal-1). Composition of three different rations supplied to all experimental animals. Though the amount of fish maal was constant for 3 levels of protein, the amount of til oil cake and urea were varied to adjust the protein levels. The initial body weight of an individual animal was taken as the averaje weight of three consecutive days. During the experimental period, the animals of different groups were weighed at every fortnight. The weights were taken in the morning before feeding. At the end of the experiment, the individual animals of three protein levels were weighed for three consecutive days and the average of these weights was taken as the final weight of the individual animal. Data were collected to measure the parameters: (i) Feed consumption (ii) Fortnightly body weight gain (iii) Digestibility of the various nutrients and (iv) Benefit cost ratio. All the animals were kept in the experimental shed under the same management condition. Good sanitary measures were taken throughout the experimental period. In order to determine the voluntary intake of different experimental rations, all the animals were supplied with a measured quantity of feed. The left over feed was removed carefully in the next morning, sun dried and weighed to determine the voluntary intake of the experimental rations. This practice was continued for 90 days. The average intake of 90 days of each individual animal was calculated . In order to find out the digestibility of the feed components a conventional digestion trial was conducted for a period of 5 days at the middle of the experiment. The amount of feed supplied to each animal during 24 hours was recorded and the residual feed, if any, was also recorded. The waight of the residual feed was then deducted from the total quantity offered to the individual animal and the daily intake of different ration ingredients was determined and recorded. Representative samples from left over feeds were collected and analyzed tot proximate components. The proximate components of feed ingredients and faeces samples (not shown) were determined as recommended by AOAC (1970). Collected data were analyzed for any statistical significance.

From the above findings it may be concluded that the ration containing 20% below protein level of NRC standard may be successfully used for computing fattening ration of local bull calves.
