Communication Behavior of Late Jute Seed Producers of Sadar Upalilla Under Rajbari District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data were collected from 100 randomly selected farmers from 5 unions of Sadar Upazila under Rajbari district during the period of 15 March to 15 August 2003 in order to determine the communication behavior of the late jute seed producers. Late jute seed producers were found to use and prefer local sources (BJRI, neighbor, friends and relatives, radio, BS) for seeking necessary information. All the respondents had low exposure to communication behavior. Almost all the respondents considered information media as an important input for late jute seed production. Except age, experience on seed production and maintenance & cosmopoliteness; all the selected characteristics were significantly related with communication behavior of the respondents.

Objectives:

1. To assess the performances of the respondents with different information media.

2. TO find out the extent to attitude of the respondents with different information media.

3. To assess the relationship between selected characteristics of respondents and their communication exposure.

4. To describe some of the selected characteristics of the respondents viz. age, educational status, family, size, land under jute cultivation, organizational participation and cosmopolitaness.

Methodology:

Different categories of farmers having farm size ranging from 0.45 ha to 10.65 ha were the population of the study. Only 100 farmers were selected randomly from 5 unions of Sadar Upazilla under Rajbari district. Data were collected through interview schedule. The data collection period was 15 march to 15 August 2003. The communication behavior on the information media usually used by the farmers in receiving information was identified through reconnaissance survey. As much as 6 media were founded to be used by the jute seed growers in receiving at the time of need. The extent of used of the 16 media was then determined by using a 5-point scale. Score such as 4 for “always”, 3 for “occasionally”, 2 for moderately” I for rarely” 0 for “never” was assigned to each of the 5 types of probable responses of the jute seed growers. The responses provided by a respondent for 16 media were added together to ascertain his score for communication behavior in receiving information. The extent of use of the different communication media measured according to the media used index (MUI). Media use index of a communication media was computed by adding the score of all the respondents for their use of that media. MUI of media was ranged from 0-400 where 0 indicates’” no use” of the media and 400 indicates maximum use. The demographic characteristics such as age and educational level were measured by using the measuring units of years and year of schooling. In case of family size the score was I for adult, ½ for minor and 0 for dependent. Other independent variables of the study were measured by using appropriate scales. Collected data were coded, complied and tabulated for interpretation and analysis. Statistical methods such as mean, standard deviation, correlation test were performed and 5% level of probability was used to test the significance of relationship.

Achievement/Findings:

1. The jute seed producers preferred local sources like friends and relatives, neighbors, radio and contact with BS rather to the professional media such as television, UAO/AEO, group meeting and Krishi khata.

2. The extent of communication behavior for receiving useful agricultural information depends on some characteristics such as level of literacy, family sizes, income and cosmopoliteness.

3. Variable like age, farm size and area under jute seed cultivation were not associated with the respondent use of communication sources.
