Tuberose Cultivation in Jessore Region: an Agro-eeconomic Assessment.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To know the existing production technologies, economic viability and to identify constraints to higher production of tuberose, a survey was done in Jessore district during September 1992 to April 1993. Majority of the farmers cultivated Rajonigandha cultivar commercially for two to three consecutive years by planting once. Plant spacing was maintained 51 cm between lines and 31 cm plant to plant accommodating about 63251 number of hills per hectare. Higher number of watering and more chemical fertilizers were used in third year and obtained highest yield (1298130 sticks/ha) in second year followed by that in third year. Flower stick harvesting was peak during Asar-Srabon (July-August) compared to that during other months. Net return was highest in second year (Tk 327907/ha) followed by third year (Tk. 20938/ha). Lack of awareness about modern tuberose cultivation techniques, higher input prices and insect infestation were the main constraints to higher production.

Objectives:

To assess the present technology employed by the farmers in tuberose cultivation;
To estimate the economic profitability;
To identify the constraints for tuberose cultivation in Bangladesh, especially in Jessore region: and
To highlight the issues for the development of future research needs.

Methodology:

Descriptive survey design was followed for this study. Jhikorgacha thana of Jessore district was selected purposively, where intensive tuberose cultivation was observed. As farmers harvested tuberose stick for two to three consecutive years by planting once, data were collected from farmers having first year to third year plots. Out of 275 tuberose farmers, 50 farmers were selected (covering 18% of the total sample) proportionately consisting 22 first year plots, 18 second year and 10 third year plots by random sampling method to obtain representative information about tuberose cultivation. Data on all input usage, output received and all other related information were collected by using a pretested interview schedule through direct questioning to the selected farmers during the period from April 1992 to March 1993. Local market price was used to compute the cost return analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data; mean, percentage etc. were employed and presented in tabular form.

There were two cultivars observed at the surveyed area. Farmers generally grow Rajonigandha cultivar due to its good storage quality, and quick and more flower giving habits. Few farmers grow another cultivar locally called Golup rajoni due to its bigger flower size and relatively high prices. But it gave flowers fewer with low storage quality compared to Rajonigandha.
