The marine fishing activities In Bangladesh are concentrated in the coastal districts and accordingly Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and Barisal-Patuakhali - were chosen for the study. This paper was designed to study the nature and extent of variation in the share system and distributing marine earnings. To attain this objective, a total sample of 425 fishing units (firms) comprising 25 trawlers, 200 gill net, 100 set bag net and 100 long line firms were selected purposively. Data were collected for the year 2000 covering both monsoon and non-monsoon season on trip monitoring basis. It appears from the study that, although marine fishing is profitable but the distribution of profit was inequitable and exploitative specially in case of small- scale artisanal fishing where boat owners received 50-60% income from fishing and the rest amount were distributed among 13-17 fishermen or crews on boat.

To determine the nature and extent of variation in the share system of distribution of marine earnings.

Since the marine fishing activities are concentrated in the coastal districts and accordingly Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and Barisal-Patuakhali - were chosen for the study. Trawler, gill net, long line and set bag net fishing were investigated as these four gears contribute much to the total marine landing. As the fishery suffers from seasonal matter, data were collected for the year 2000 covering both monsoon and non-monsoon season on trip monitoring basis. It was reported that there are 52 trawlers and 12000 mechanized boats being used in marine fishing. From all these trawlers and mechanized boats, a total sample of 425 fishing units comprising 25 trawlers, 200 gill net, 100 long line and 100 set bag net firms were selected purposively. All these sampled firms were selected depending on concentration and availability in different locations. Following production technologies were used in marine fisheries: Shrimp trawler was used to catch shrimp from the deep sea. Its nets were operated by two beams, which were directly connected with trawler engine. Along the two sides of the trawler, nets were put down into water. The main components of this net were head rope and ground rope, and nets were opened vertically. Different species of fishes were caught by fin fish trawler. Fishes were collected time to time or 4 hours interval and collected fishes were preserved in the trawler during fishing period. Duration of fishing per trip for fin fish trawler is usually 7-13 days. Shrimp trawler, fin fish trawler, gill net, set bag and long line nets generally catch various species of fish. All the trawlers used in marine fishing were imported from Japan, China and Russia. The average capacity of shrimp trawler and fin fish trawler were 126.54 and 71.44 metric tons and their corresponding Gross Registered Tonnage were 202.9 and 122.81 mt respectively. Engine power was the most important factor of marine fishing. High-powered engine trawlers were able to go to deep sea in search of more productive fishing grounds. Engine power of the trawlers ranged from 450-1020 horse power. Average HP of engine of shrimp trawler and fin fish trawler were 847 and 526 respectively. However, the average numbers of crew of the shrimp trawler and fin fish trawler were 25 and 23 persons respectively. Trip duration of the shrimp trawler and fin fish trawler were 29.46 and 12.5 days respectively. It can be seen that the average capacity per boat was higher for gill net compared to set bag and long line nets fishing boats. However, per trip fishing duration were 10.48, 5.00 and 13.16 days for gill net, set bag and long line net fishing and the corresponding number of trips made per year by respective fishing boats were 24, 40 and 20 days only. Each type of fishing boat comprises with crew and the average numbers of crew for gill net, set bag and long line net were 17.00, 12.00 and 17.00 respectively. Engine power appeared to be the most important factor of marine fishing. Engine HP of gill net, set bag and long line net fishing boats ranged from 30-80, 10-40 and 20-65 HP while their average HP were 55.00, 25.00 and 49.00 respectively.

The study  revealed some valuable information regarding sharing arrangement and distribution of marine earnings. The study has found that the sharing system and distribution of marine fishing under different production technologies were inequitable and exploitative. Specially, in small- scale artisanal fishing where boat owners received the lion's share of income (50-60%) from fishing and small amount were distributed among 13-17 fishermen or crews on fishing boat by which they led very hard lives. Therefore, income-sharing arrangement should be made; which seemed to be logical by enacting law or through creation of small-scale fishermen cooperatives in which actual fishing people could be the members. Bank credit could be provided to the cooperatives so that fishing boats, gears etc, could be purchased. Thus the actual fishermen could be  the owners of the fishing boats and all sources of exploitation might be waived out.
