The attempt of the study was: a) to determine the problem encountered by the farm youth regarding health and recreational aspects; b) to describe the eleven selected characteristics of farm youth; and c) to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of farm youth and their extent of problem encountered regarding health and recreational aspects. Problem Index (PI) was developed to measure each of the items regarding selected aspects. PI ranged from 151-283 against a possible range of 0-300. PI of six items exceeded 200 and of them 'inability to take nutritious and balanced foods regularly due to poverty' (283), 'timely treatment is often not possible due to lack of cash' (250), and 'do not find time for games/ amusements due to heavy farming duty (245) were the top three items in rank order. On the other hand, six items had PI below 200 and of them 'unavailability of magazines, books and newspaper etc. in the villages' (171), 'lack of recreational facilities at home' (159), and 'irregular visit of health worker in the villages' (151) were the lowest three items in rank order. Overall problem in selected aspects indicated that the highest proportion (56%) of the farm youth were found in high category, little less than one-third (31%) were medium and only 13% of the respondents were found in low problem category. The results of correlation analysis revealed that among the eleven selected characteristics of farm youth education, training experience, organizational participation, cosmopoliteness, family education, extension contact, family income, family farm size, family assets and innovativeness had significant negative and only age of the respondents had significant positive relationship with their problem encountered regarding health and recreational aspects.

  Performance

a. To determine and describe the problems encountered by the farm youth regarding health and recreational aspects;

b. To ascertain the selected characteristics of farm youth;

c. To explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of farm youth and their problems encountered regarding health and recreational aspects.

A total of nine villages of Chechua Block of Muktagacha upazila under Mymensingh district namely, Curipara, Bolbari, Joinkanda, Chechua, Shreemrambari, Kashobpur, Krishnapur, Dhaunca and Roghunathpur were selected purposively as the locale of this piece of research. The respondents of these study areas were male farm youth of 15-30 years age category. The selected villages of the Block had 250 farm youth families (a family having at least one farm youth in the desired age group) with 266 farm youth. In order to get a sample firstly about 40% farm youth families were selected from these nine selected villages of Chechua Block by proportionate random sampling method. Then one farm youth was selected from each of the selected families (random method was also used to select a male farm youth when a family was having more than one farm youth). Thus, 100 farm youths were finally selected from 100 farm youth families, which constituted the sample for the present study. Data were collected through interview scheduled from 20 September to 25 November 2000. A total of eleven characteristics of farm youth were selected namely, age, education, knowledge in improved crop cultivation, training experience, organizational participation, cosmopolitansess, family education, extension contact, family income, family farm size and innovativeness as the independent variables. Most of the independent variables were measured by developing scales. Problem encountered by the farm youth regarding health and recreational aspect was the dependent variable. The extent of problems encountered by the farm youth regarding health and recreational aspects was measured by developing a 4-point modified Likert type scale with responses namely, high, medium, low and no; and weights assigned for each of these responses were 3, 2, 1 and 0 respectively. Twelve items were selected for representing the problems of farm youth regarding health and recreational aspects. Scores of the respondents in twelve items thus, could range from 0-36. The extent of problem of farm youth regarding health and recreational aspects was measured and examined in two ways- i) according to the percentage of farm youth in each item by frequency distribution and ii) according to the total score obtained by a respondent in all twelve items. For a clear understanding of the problems of farm youth in selected aspects, Problem Index (PI) was developed to arrange the items in rank of order by using the formula. Problem Index for any item related to health and recreational aspects could range from 0-300. 0 indicating no problem and 300 indicating high problem. Correlation test was employed to determine the relationship between the eleven selected characteristics of farm youth and their problem encountered regarding health and recreational aspects.

Majority of the farm youths who live in the rural areas face more problems regarding health and recreational aspects than their urban counterparts. The basic necessities of these youths are not satisfied because of their massive poverty. Proper growth and development of these youth is hardly occurred normally due to lack of nutritious and balanced foods regularly, and recreational facilities. The farm youths, who belong to low income, poorer and illiterate families usually face more problems than the farm youth from educated and wealthy families. The results of correlation analysis revealed that among the eleven selected characteristics of farm youth education, training experience, organizational participation, cosmopolite ness, family education, extension contact, family income, family farm size, family assets and innovative ness had significant negative and only age of the respondents had significant positive relationship with their problem encountered regarding health and recreational aspects.
