Comparative Performance of Three Genotypes of Ducks Under Rural Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A comparative performance of Khaki Campbell (KC), Desi (DD) and their crosses (F_I) was studied under rural conditions. Egg production, age at onset of lay, body weight at sexual maturity, age at 50% egg production, age at peak production, egg weight in different stages and mortality were recorded up to one production year. Average number of eggs per duck per year were 58.02, 39.46 and 56.38, hen-day egg production were 16.58, 10.8 and 20.14 per cent, onset of lay were 154.33, 181.67 and 173.33th day, average body weight at first lay were 1417.89, 1365.00 and 1401.08g, average age at 50% egg production were 166.33, 184.67 and 188.00th day, age at peak production were 177.33, 292.00 and 216.67th day and per cent mortality were 58.33, 72.22 and 72.22 for Khaki Campbell, Desi and crossbred respectively. The differences in egg weight of these three genotypes was insignificant at 6 months of age but KC and F_I was significantly different from Desi (P < 0.05) at 18th month of age. The results show that the peak in egg production was not related on the age of the bird, which demonstrated that the effect of season related to nutrition and management was dominant over genetic effect under rural conditions.

Objectives:

To determine the comparative performance in economic traits Khaki Campbell, Desi (indigenous) and their crossbred under rural scavenging system of rearing.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in a village Gokulnagar under Savar upazila of Dhaka district. The location of the study area is prone to seasonal inundation. Three months old ducklings of Khaki Campbell (KC), Desi (DD) and F_I crossbred (KC x DD) were collected from Central Duck Breeding Farm, Narayangonj and distributed to the nine randomly selected small farmers at the village. Each breed of ducks were randomly distributed among three farmers with ten females and two males per farm. All the ducklings were vaccinated against duck cholera before distribution to the farmers. The experimental birds were reared under the existing husbandry practices conventionally done in the village. Monthly body weight, egg production, egg weight (with three months interval), age at 1st lay, age at 50% egg production, body weight at 1st lay and mortality) of the ducks on individual farm household basis up to one complete production year starting from May to April of the year 1989-90. Egg production record for total eggs per bird, annual egg number per bird, age at peak production, and both hen-housed and hen-day were calculated from 154 days of age. The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis by Completely Randomized Design (CRD).

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that the peak in egg production was not related on the age of the bird, which demonstrated that the effect of season related to nutrition and management was dominant over genetic effect under rural conditions. From the above findings it may be assumed that if hatching of eggs matched with the peak production cycle and feed availability, there will be an increase in the egg production of the duck.
