Prediction of Selection Response for Spikelet Fertility in Heterozygous Tetraploid Populations of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The usefulness of selection as a tool to improve spike let fertility in autotetraploids of rice was investigated. The pattern of segregation for spike let fertility in two heterozygous population derived from crossing four tetraploid forms of rice showed the possibility of segregating plants with 66-85% spike let fertility. The plants selected for spike let fertility also had higher levels of expression of yield-contributing characters. Based on the estimates of heritability and selection differential, the expected response to selection for spike let fertility was shown to vary between 13.6 and 15.7% in two hybrid tetraploid population of rice.

Objectives:

To study on selection for spike let fertility in two heterozygous tetraploid populations of rice .

Methodology:

Two crosses were made using four autotetraploid forms of rice (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica) produced through colchicine treatment of seeds. They were Belem, VNIIR 7101, Soyuzni 244 and Dubovski 129. The F₁ plants were raised in plots to get F₂ seeds. The populations of P₁, P₂ were sown in single row plot of 1m² length each with a row by plant spacing of 20 cm x 5 cm. The experiment was set using a randomized block design with four replications. Data were recorded on grain yield per plant, grain yield per panicle, total dry weight of plants, 1000-grain weight and spike let fertility on individual plant basis from all 80 F₂ plants in each combination. Mean F₂ data were subjected to the analysis of variance and subsequently to estimation of heritability in broad sense. Seven plants showing high values of spike let fertility were selected from each cross. The expected response to selection was calculated from the estimates of selection differential and heritability.
