Prediction of Effectiveness of Selection in Rice Based on Environmental and Genotypic Variability of Quantitative Traits

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty-one diverse varieties, lines and accessions of rice were tested in two sharply contrasting agro-ecological environments to study the pattern of environmental and genotypic variability of some yield-determining and morphological characters of rice. Grain yield/plant and panicles/plant were found to exhibit strong environmental variability that makes it difficult to select for these traits directly. The level of environmental fluctuation for grain weight/panicle was considerably lower than that for grain yield/plant. Selection for the former trait is expected to allow the breeder identity superior genotypes. One thousand-grain weight also showed higher phenotypical stability and selection for this trait is expected to be effective.

Objectives:

To investigate the pattern of environmental and genotypic variability for several yield-determining and morphological characters of rice in two contrasting agro-ecological environments.

Methodology:

The field experiments were conducted at the All-Union Rice Research Institute (AURRI) krasnodar, USSR and at Patuakhali Agricultural College (PAC), Dumki, Patuakhali from 1988 to 1989. The experimental material consisted of 21 diverse varieties. lines and accessions belonging to japonica and indica subspecies of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and four F₂s obtained by crossing to K424 variety in a line x tester fashion. In 1988 and 1989, all varieties and accessions were grown at AURRI a randomized complete block design with three replications. Each of them was raised in a single row plot, 3m long with row-to-row distance of 25 cm. The F₂s were raised in the same way as the parents except that each plot comprised of three rows. Space planting was done at a distance of 5 cm in each row. The same set of experimental material except the F₂s were grown at PAC during 1988/89 following the same methods. Ten randomly selected plants in each replication were tagged in case of varieties/accessions and 50 in case of the F₂s for recording observations. Data were recorded on grain yield/plant, grain weight/panicle, grains/panicle, grains/plant, panicles/plant, 1000- grain weight, panicle length, plant height, number of nodes on main culm, upper internode length, tillers/plant, length, width and area of flag leaf Coefficients of environmental variation (CVe), genotypic vanation (CVg), total phenotypic variation (CVe + g) were calculated for each trait studied using the results obtained from analysis of variance. Broad-sense heritability was estimated.

In the present study, the level of environmental variability for grain weight per panicle was considerably lower than that for grain yield per plant as a whole. Selection for the former trait will allow the breeder to identify superior genotypes. 1000- grain weight also showed higher phenotypical stability and selection for this trait is expected to be effective.
