Characterization of Lentil Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One hundred accessions of lentil were undertaken for characterization during the winter season of 2013-14. Eight qualitative and nine quantitative characters were studied. Qualitative variations were predominantly present in all characters except leaf pubescence and pod shedding. The first flower initiation was found at 68 days. The highest seed weight per plant (8.40g) was recorded in BD-3885 while the lowest (0.80g) was observed in BD-3822. The highest 100-seed weight (6.7g) was found in BD-10093 and the lowest was found in BD-3881(0.12g). The highest CV was found in days to 50% flowering (50.1%) followed by 100-seed weight (39.46%.).

Objectives:

To characterize the lentil germplasm, ii) to identify salient features that distinguish germplasm from one another and iii) to identify germplasm having useful traits.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the winter season 2013-14. The experiment was laid out in non-replicated method. Unit plot size was 4m x 1m and seeds were sown in rows with spacing 40 cm. The seeds were sown on 18 November, 2013. Fungicide, insecticide and other intercultural operations were applied as and when necessary. Five plants were selected randomly from three rows of each accession. Data were recorded on qualitative and quantitative charactersas as per IBPGR descriptor of lentil (IBPGR, 1985). Data were analyzed statistically

Morphological variations of 100 lentil accessions for different characters were characterized. All the accessions of lentil accessions showed morphological variations in the characters except leaf pubescence, tendril length and pod shedding. The highest variability was observed in seed color viz. olive-3, grey-94 and brown-2 and black–1. In case of leaflet size, small-38, medium-41 and large-21 were found. For flower ground color; pink-5, white-83 and violet-12 were observed. Two types of seedling stem pigmentation such as present-22 and absent-78 were observed among the accessions. In pod pigmentation, absent-7 and present-93 were found. One hundred accessions of lentil were characterized. Most of the accessions showed morphological variation. The first flower initiation was found earlier in 84 accessions. The highest number of flower per peduncle was obtained in BD-3884. The highest seed weight per plant (8.40g) was recorded in BD-3858 and the lowest (0.80g) was found in BD-10093. The seeds were conserved in the gene bank for future use.
