Twenty two accessions of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch Ex Poir) were characterized to know the genetic diversity of collected accessions from different parts of the Bangladesh. The accessions showed enormous variations both in the qualitative and quantitative characters. Different shape of fruits such as globular, flattened and elliptical was found. Maximum accessions were showed intermediate fruit rib and brown fruit color. Orange and yellow flesh colour were exhibited among the pumpkin accessions. The highest coefficient of variation was observed in number of fruit per plant (55.14%) followed by cavity length (42.58%) and fruit weight (40.98%), and the lowest coefficient of variation found in flesh thickness (13.93%). Some accessions were selected for further study.

To study the genetic diversity of pumpkin accessions, to identify salient morphological features and useful traits, which can be used by the breeder for appropriate breeding program.

The experiment was conducted in Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI at Gazipur during winter 2013. Seeds of the accessions were sown in pot on 28 November 2013 before planting in the main field.  In the meantime land was prepared with proper cultivation with 8m x 3.5m bed preparation and 70 cm drain was kept between beds. The land was fertilized with cow-dung, urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc @ 20000, 175, 175, 150, 100 and 12 kg/ha, respectively. The total amount of cow-dung, TSP, gypsum and zinc; and 1/3rd of MP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of MP was applied in two equal installments at 15 and 30 days after transplanting. Urea was applied in four equal installments at 10, 25, 40 and 55 days after transplanting (FRG, 2012). Twenty five days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field. The experiment was laid out with non replicated design and each plot consist three pits. Irrigation, weeding was done to ensure the proper growth and development of the crop. Savin, Actara and theovit were sprayed for controlling pest and diseases. Proper management was taken to maintain the quality production. Additional branches of the plant had been cut to grow the main stem. At the reproductive stage, selfing was done to ensure the purity of the accession. Different qualitative and quantitative data were taken in vegetative, reproductive and fruiting stage following the Descriptors for vegetables and condiments (1995). The fruit was harvested at the mature condition to obtain quality seed and collect fruit data.  All the quantitative data were statistically analyzed.

Among the accessions bushy (17) and intermediate (5) type growth habits were found. Leaf shape was reniform (22) and color of leaf spot was absent (22). All accessions produced orange flower color (22) and their flowering habit was monoecious (22), means bearing male and female flower in the same plant. Different types of fruit shape such as, globular (4), flattened (5), oblong blocky (3), elliptical (9) and elongate form (1) were found. Most of accessions produce intermediate (19) fruit rib and the rib shape were rounded (19), intermediate (2) and no rib (1). Predominant fruit skin color was brown (19) and there was no secondary color (14) in most of accessions, few of them were white (4) and cream (2) color. Different types of fruit skin texture such as smooth (9), grainy (9) and netted (4) observed. In case of flesh color, most of them was orange (17) and some were yellow (5). Quantitative characters are the yield contributing factors. Fruit length was ranged from 10.9 to 48.5 cm and fruit width was ranged from 16 to 29.7 cm. The average fruit weight was 4.71 kg. There was a far variation in cavity length and width, for these reason cavity length showed the high co-efficient of variation of 42.58%.  The average length and width of cavity was 16.44 and 13.44 cm, respectively. Flesh thickness ranged from 3 to 5 cm. Number of fruits per plant showed the highest co-efficient of variation (55.15%). Some of the accession produce the highest twelve fruits per plant.  Number of seeds per fruit ranged from 224 to 494. Considering yield contribution factors and other quality BD 10060, BD 10063, BD 10134, BD 10140, BD 10142, BD 10144, BD 10149, BD 10363, BD 10364 and BD 10366 were performed better. Variability found in different character such as plant growth type, number of fruits per plant, fruit shape, fruit length, width, flesh thickness, color and cavity diameter. Ten accessions were selected for better performances. The variation of theses accessions can be used further for specific breeding program or varietal development purpose. Seeds of the accessions were conserved in the gene bank for future research and use.
