This experiment was conducted to investigate the cattle fattening programmes of rural farmers in Panchagarh district of Bangladesh through field survey. Data were collected through interview schedule personally from 30 farmers in three villages of sadar upazilla involved in cattle fattening before Eid-ul-Azha in 2007. Parameters studied were the socio-economic conditions of the farmers, factors associated with cattle fattening, daily routine activities, feeding and marketing system of fattening cattle, problems of fattening cattle and cost benefit analysis. In this study 40% of the farmers had primary level of education and 20% had no education. About 56.7% of the farmers used cattle of 2-3 years of age and 36.7% of the farmers used cattle of 1-2 years age. About 70% farmers used bulls and 70% farmers had an average of 1-4 cattle for fattening. Fattening period of 3-6 months and 7-12 months were reported by 60% and 30% of the farmers, respectively. Separate houses for cattle were provided by 86.7% of the farmers. About 63.4% of the farmers washed their cattle in ponds and rivers regularly. About 76.7% of the farmers had short training on livestock rearing and 80% farmers dewormed their cattle before starting the fattening program. About 96.6% of farmers reported shortages of animal feed and 86.6% reported lack of credit as the major problems of cattle fattening. Average total cost, sale proceeds and net profits were 7528, 9542 and 2055 Taka/cattle respectively. The farmers earned a profit of 27.3% on their total investment. Small scale cattle fattening programs could be recommended as an income generating activity for the rural farmers of Bangladesh.

1. To collect information about cattle fattening practices by rural farmers.

2. To assess the socio-economic background of the farmer.

3. To investigate the marketing systems and the cost and benefit of cattle fattening.

The experiment was conducted in three villages, namely Maladam, Mirgor and Haribhasha of sadar upazila under the Panchagarh district of Bangladesh. The duration of the study was four months including buying, fattening and selling of the cattle before Eid-ul-Azha in the January, 2007. The farmers were selected who rear cattle or bought cattle for fattening and were able to give information when necessary. Ten (10) farmers were randomly chosen from each village. Therefore, total 30 farmers were chosen for collecting data to satisfy the objectives. The data were collected through direct interview and making frequent personal visits. Before making actual interview, the objectives of the study were explained clearly to the farmers. Then the questions were asked in a very simple manner with explanation whenever necessary. The interview schedule contained the following items of information: general information about cattle owners, livestock population, management of the fattening cattle, feeds and feeding, marketing, cost and return of fattening cattle. The problems and probable solutions related to cattle fattening was also identified. The data on different parameters in this study were exploratory descriptive. Therefore, data were compiled, tabulated and analyzed with simple statistical method to fulfill the objectives of the study. Tabular technique was applied for the analysis of data using simple statistical tools like average and percentages etc.

Based on the above study it can be said that, as the success of beef fattening business depends on the socio-economic background of the farmer and the factors related to cattle fattening so the socio-economic background of the farmer and the factors related to cattle fattening need to be taken into consideration. From the above study, it also revealed that the average net return per cattle was 27.3% (Tk. 2055) so the beef fattening program could play a significant role in poverty elevation and unemployment reduction by engaging unemployed men & women in beef fattening program. Beef cattle enterprises have a great prospect in Bangladesh. Not only during Eid-ul-Azha but also it has a great demand round the year through out the country. It is essential to provide cheap and nutritionally balanced diet to maximize the growth of beef cattle. Improved feeding technology like Urea Molasses Straw (UMS) and Urea Molasses Block (UMB) should be extended, for efficient utilization of straw. Some support services related to cattle fattening such as easy bank loan, low cost processed feed, training from GO and NGO's are needed for farmers to make the cattle fattening a successful programme. Finally, from this study it can be recommended that the rural farmers of Bangladesh could use the small scale cattle fattening programme as an income generating activity.
