Utilization of Fallow Lands Through Mustard Cultivation with High Yielding Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An on-farm trial with high yielding varieties of mustard was conducted in the coastal saline areas of Killarchar under Companygonj, Char Kazi Mokhles under Subornachar and Hazirhat, under Noakhali Sadar Upazilla during rabi season of 2011-12. The objective was to popularize BARI developed high yielding mustard varieties among the farmers instead of the traditional local variety to increase productivity and economic benefit. BARI Sarisha-14 and BARI Sarisha-15 were tested in six dispersed farmers' fields against local variety. The highest seed yield was obtained from BARI Sarisha 14 (1037 kg/ha), which was 457 kg/ha higher over the local variety (580 kg ha^-1). BARI Sarisha 14 produced gross margin of Tk. 2505/ha and benefit cost ratio of 2.15.

Objectives:

To popularize BARI developed high yielding mustard varieties among the farmers instead of the traditional local variety to increase productivity and economic benefit.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi season, 2011-12 at Killarchar under Companygonj, Char Kazi Mokhles under Subornaehar and Hazirhat under Noakhali Sadar Upazilla. BARI developed two high yielding mustard varieties BARI Sarisha 14, BARI Sarisha 15 were tested in six dispersed farmers' fields against local variety, The plot size of each farmer was about one bigha. Seeds were sown in solid lines during 21-30 November 2011 with proper spacing. The land was fertilized with 50-27-40-20 kg NPKS/ha. Half of N and all other fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Rest of N fertilizer was used as top dress at 25 days alter sowing at the time of first weeding. There was aphid infestation at the vegetative stage of the crop, for which protective measures were taken by spraying Ripcord 10 EC. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. The crop was harvested during 15 February to 5 March 2012. Mean yield data of six farmers' plot were recorded and economic analysis was done. Gross return and variable cost were calculated considering the price of mustard seed: Tk 70.00/kg, urea: Tk. 20.00/kg, TSP: Tk. 22.00/kg, MoP: Tk. 15.00/kg and Gypsum: Tk. 12.00/kg. Other variables costs for land preparation, sowing, weeding, insecticide, harvesting, threshing, processing etc. were also included. Price of mustard was Tk. 45.00/kg.

Achievement/Findings:

Higher productivity (1037 kg/ha), net return (Tk. 25050/ha) and BCR (2.15) was observed in BARI developed high yielding mustard varieties BARI sharisha 14 in the fallow lands of saline coastal areas of Noakhali, which can be widely disseminated in the area.
