The field experiments were conducted during 2000-2001 cropping seasons at Ishurdi and Jamalpur sites under High Ganges River Floodplain and Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplain soils of Bangladesh, respectively. Each treatment replicated thrice in a randomized complete block design. The experiment comprised of six treatments: T1-Sole sugarcane (MYG as per AEZ), T2- Sole sugarcane (HYG as per STV), T3- Sugarcane (as per BSRI'98), T4- Sugarcane + potato (as per FRG'97), T5- Sugarcane + potato (as per BSRI'98) and T6-. Sugarcane + potato (as per BSRI'98) followed by dhaincha where MYG-Moderate yield goal; STV - Soil test value; BSRI -Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute; FRG- Fertilizer recommendation guide. At Jamalpur site sugarcane showed significant response to different fertilizer on tillers, millable cane and yield of cane. Tiller number was found to be significantly affected by the different fertilizer combinations. The higher tiller population of 352.3 x 103 ha-1 was recorded in the T6 plot where the lowest of 274.8 x 103 ha-1 in the T5 treatment. The number of millable cane stalks significantly increased and maximum number of millable cane stalks 217.9 x 103 ha-1 was from the T6 treatment followed by the T4 and T5 while the minimum of 131.4 x 103 ha-1. Data on cane yield of T6 treatment showed superiority to rest of the treatments. The highest yield of 114.9 t ha-1 was obtained from the treatment T5 followed by the treatment T6 and was statistically similar. The lowest yield of 102 t ha-1 was obtained from T1 treatment where only sole cane was raised. It is assumed that sugarcane cane yield was highest in T4,T5 and T6 treatment over sole cane ( T1 due to residual effects of applied fertilizer for intercrop potato i.e. sugarcane yields were not adversely affected by intercropping potatoes, results revealed that the treatment received fertilizer as per BSRI'98 had increased by 7 to 9 per cent more cane yield compared to the treatment received fertilizer as per FRG'97 both for cane and potato. Fertilizer application as per STB against targeted yield performed better and increased cane yield -by 9 per cent over MYG as per AEZ. For sugarcane - potato intercropped situation 4 to 12 per cent cane yield was increased over sole cane alone.

To determine the fertilizer requirement of sugarcane as well as intercrop potato at two different agroecological zones (AEZs) under sugarcane based cropping systems.

The soil of Ishurdi and Jamalpur was calcareous and acidic in nature, respectively with low in organic matter and deficient in total N, available K and S. The experiment comprised of six treatments: T1-Sole sugarcane (MYG as per AEZ), T2- Sole sugarcane (HYG as per STV), T3- Sugarcane (as per BSRI'98), T4- Sugarcane + potato (as per FRG'97), T5- Sugarcane + potato (as per BSRI'98) and T6-. Sugarcane + potato (as per BSRI'98) followed by dhaincha where MYG-Moderate yield goal; STV - Soil test value; BSRI -Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute; FRG- Fertilizer recommendation guide. The doses of fertilizer in different treatments are presented. A 30-day pregerminated single bud soil bed settlings of variety Isd 30 and variety Isd 28 at Ishurdi and Jamalpur were transplanted, respectively in December 2001 and harvested 13 months later. The pot dimension was 8 m x 6m. One line of potato tuber (variety cardinal) were planted in between cane rows and harvested after 90 days of plantation. Full dose of P, S, Zn as TSP, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied in trenches and thoroughly mixed with soils by spade prior to transplanting of sugarcane settlings. One-third of the quantities of N and K were top-dressed after 20-30 days of settling transplanting. The rest amount of N and K fertilizers was applied in two phases, first half at tiller completion stage and second half at grand growth stage. Half of N, K and all other fertilizers for potato were applied at the vacant space of two cane rows and mixed thoroughly with soils and remaining N and K were applied as top dressing. The recommended crop management practices were followed when required for cane and potato as well.

In conclusion, results revealed that the treatment received fertilizer as per BSRI'98 had increased by 7 to 9 per cent more cane yield compared to the treatment received fertilizer as per FRG'97 both for cane and potato. Fertilizer application as per STB against targeted yield performed better and increased cane yield by 9 per cent over MYG as per AEZ. For sugarcane - potato intercropped situation 4 to 12 per cent cane yield was increased over sole cane alone.
