Production and Export Opportunities of Jara and Colombo Lemon from Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in two districts namely Sylhet and Narsingdi to examine the production technology of Jara and Colombo lemon growers, estimate profitability and identify the constraints of Jara and Colombo lemon. A total of 120 farmers taking 60 for Jara lemon from Sylhet and 60 for Colombo lemon from Narsingdi were selected randomly for the study. Data were collected through a pre-tested schedule during April-May 2015. Cost return analysis revealed that Jara and Colombo lemon cultivation were profitable in the study areas. Jara lemon cultivation's highest cost was estimated Tk. 41,3575/ha in (11-15)^th year garden and lowest cost was Tk.36,5777/ha in 2^nd year garden. Gross return was highest in 5^th year garden (Tk.19,95750/ha) and lowest Tk. 975600/ha in (11-15)^th year garden. The benefit cost ratio at 6.5% rate of interest was 2.85 and IRR 98%. Colombo lemon cultivation highest cost was estimated Tk. 31,6505/ha in 4^th year garden and lowest cost was Tk.25,7543/ha in (11-15)^th year garden. Gross return was highest Tk.841522 in 5^th year garden and lowest Tk. 413616/ha in (11-15)^th year garden. The benefit cost ratio at 6.5% rate of interest was 1.81 and IRR 124%. Lack of improved production technology, poor quality saplings, insect/pest infestation, adulteration of fertilizer and insecticides and less number of export buyers were found to be the major constraints both for Jara and Colombo lemon production.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in purposively selected two districts namely Narsingdi and Sylhet. Multi-stage sampling technique was followed for the study. A total of 120 farmers from the two districts; 60 for Jara lemon and 60 for Colombo lemon from the selected places were randomly selected. Experienced field investigators under the direct supervision of the researchers, collected data and information using a pre-tested interview schedule. Data were categorized according to the year of cultivation. The age of the lemon garden were classified like 1^st year, 2^nd year, 3^rd year, 4^th year, 5^th year, (6-10)^th year and (11-15)^th year. Then the collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. Tabular methods of analysis using descriptive statistics were used in presenting the results of the study. The results from a series of benefit-cost analysis was used to compare competing projects. BCA was further used to assess business decision, to examine the worth of public investments and to assess the wisdom of using natural resources or altering environmental conditions.

Achievement/Findings:

Agronomic practices were found more or less similar both for Jara and Colombo lemon. Farmers used grafted saplings, planting time were from from June to August, and average plant to plant distance were 3 meters. Farmers applied cowdung, Urea, TSP and MoP in their garden. Main cost items were found to be labour and fertilizer. The benefit cost ratio, net present value and internal rate of return indicated that, farmers were benefited through cultivation of Jara and Colombo lemon in the study areas. By doing sensitivity analysis it was clear that, both lemon producers could earn profit even under changing situation.
