Effect of New Fungicides in Controlling Late Blight Disease of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial to evaluate the efficacy of some chemical fungicides for the control of potato late blight disease was done during the rabi season of 2014 – 2015 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur. Fifteen (15) new chemical fungicides along with two recommended fungicides were evaluated at predetermined doses. Among the fungicides 12 were found highly effective against late blight as compared to unsprayed control. The disease severity of unsprayed plots at 70 Days after planting (DAP) was 100%. But in case of the most effective fungicides the severity were within the range of 2.00% - 4.66%.

Objectives:

The experiment was undertaken to test the efficacy of some new fungicides in controlling late blight of potato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during Rabi season of 2014-15 following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having three replications. The unit plot size was 3.0 m X 1.80 m with block to block distance 1.50 m and plot to plot distance within a block 1.0 m. The row to row spacing was 60 cm and seed to seed was 25 cm. So, each plot was ensured with three rows and twelve seeds in a row. Good quality seed tubers of susceptible variety Diamant were collected from Breeder Seed Production Center (BSPC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Debiganj and Panchagarh. The seed tubers were planted on 27 November, 2014. The recommended fertilizer dose developed by Tuber Crops Research Center (TCRC), BARI was followed. Well decomposed cow dung @ 10 t ha^-1 and zinc sulphate @ 10 kg ha^-1 was spread to soil before opening of land. A split application of Urea i.e. ½ of the recommended and full doses of TSP, MoP, Gypsum, Magnesium sulphate and boric acid were applied as row placement besides 5-7 cm of the seed planting rows on either side. The remaining half of Urea was applied as side applications at 35 DAP followed by earthing up of soil by spade. Other agronomic practices were done properly. Fifteen(15) new chemical fungicides namely Avlon @ 0.2%, Dominion @ 0.2%, Micra @ 0.2%, Mycozeb @ 0.2%, Panda @ 0.2%, Monzil @ 0.2%, Nister @ 0.2%, Cycozeb @ 0.2%, Maxima @ 0.2%, Fiester @ 0.2%, Autobac @ 0.2%, Zeba @ 0.2%, Tolex @ 0.2%, Navara @ 0.1%, Mona@ 0.05% and two old fungicides namely Dithane M-45@ 0.2% and Secure @ 0.1% were used in this experiment as check. An unsprayed control was also maintained. Spraying was started 30 days after planting. Five sprays at 10 days interval were done. Data of disease severity was recorded before each spray and after 10 days of last spray. Haulm pulling was done 90 days after planting and harvesting was completed 10 days after haulm pulling.Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into ton/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the 17 fungicides tested against Late blight of potato 12 were found very effective, 2 less effective and 3 ineffective in reducing the disease severity. The ineffective fungicides were Avlon, Autobac and Tolex. The lowest disease severity (2.00%) was recorded in the plots sprayed with Monzil, which was followed by Nister, Cycozeb, Panda, Maxima, Dithane M-45 and secure. These fungicides were statistically similar in reducing disease. The unsprayed plots showed 100% disease severity at 70 DAP. The highest tuber yield 55.28 t/h was obtained from the plots sprayed with Secure followed by Dithane M-45, Dominion and Monzil. The yield of Monzil, Nister, Cycozeb, Panda, Maxima, Dithane M-45, Dominion and secure were statistically similar
