Effects of Date of Planting and Spacing on the Production of Cauliflower Cv. Kartika

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The influence of planting date and spacing on the growth and yield of Kartika variety of cauliflower were studied at BINA, Mymensingh. The maximum plant height, number of leaves/plant at harvest and leaf size were obtained from 20 and 30 September planting and decreased gradually with the subsequent plantings. Similarly these were better with the plants given wider spacing (60x60 cm) than the closer spacing (60x50 cm and 60x40 cm). Bigger curds were produced by the seedlings planted on 20 (1.06 kg) and 30 (1.07 kg) September in combination with 60x60 cm. But maximum yield of 28.10 ton and 28.32 ton per hectare were given by the plantings done on 20 and 30 September respectively with a spacing of 60x40 cm.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum time of planting and suitable spacing for obtaining maximum yield in Kartika variety of cauliflower.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture Farm, Mymensingh during the period from August to December 1988. The soil belongs to the old Brahmaputra Flood Plain (Non-calcareous Dark Grey Flood Plain) having silt loam texture. Average organic matter, carbon and nitrogen contents were 1.9, 0.6 and 0.06 percents, respectively and pH value ranged from 5.6 to 7.4. The variety Kartika was used as expeimentat material. Four dates of planting viz, September 20, 30 and October 10, 20 and three spacings for planting viz. 60 x 60cm, 60 x 50cm 60 x 40cm were usad as experimental treatments. The plants/ha at these spacings were 27778, 33334 and 41667 respectively. The seeds were procured from BADC. The seedlings were raised in the seedbed and transplanting was done in the main plot when they were 30 days old. A split-plot design replicated three times was used with date of planting in the main plots and spacing in sub-plots. The unit plot size was 7.2 sq. m. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 10 tons cowdung, 100 kg urea, 90 kg TSP and 60 kg MP per hectare. Usual cultural practices including irrigation were done as and when required. Harvesting was done from 2 to 30 December 1988 according to the maturity of the crop and curd yield was recorded for each plot and then converted to yield/ha. Data on plant height, no. of leaves per plant, length and breadth of largest leaf, diameter of mature curd and individual curd weight was recorded. The number of leaves per plant were considered as the number of leaves that were present on the plant at time of harvest.

In conclusion, it may be suggested that in case of Kartika variety of cauliflower the seedlings should be transplanted within the month of September maintaining a spacing of 60 x 40 cm to obtain maximum yield.
