An oil expeller was designed and fabricated at the workshop of the Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period of 2013-2014. The expeller was made of locally available mild steel. Overall dimension of the expeller was 1640 m×560 m×985 mm. Four kilograms of mustard (BARI Sharisha-15) was expelled per batch. The average engine and machine speeds were 1166 and 35 rpm, respectively. Average 1.34 kg of oil (crude) was obtained from 4.0 kg of mustard. Oil recovery was 33.50%. The expelling capacity of the oil expeller for mustard was 7.30 kg/h. During operation of the machine some problems were observed. Stop of engine at lower speed and slippage of belt during running were the major problems. The machine will be modified with a gear box to avoid belt pulley system and tested for small and large sizes of oil seeds in the next year

a) Designing and fabrication of a mini oil expeller for expelling small and large sizes oil seeds

b) Performance evaluation of the oil expeller for expelling mustard oil

An oil expeller was designed and fabricated at the workshop of the Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period of 2013-2014. It was made of locally available materials. The materials used for fabrication of different parts of the machine were MS plate, MS angle bar, MS flat bar, MS rod, MS sheet, cast iron, ball bearing, pulley, flat belt etc. The functional parts of the machine were feeding tray, rotor casing, spiral screw, shaft, cone, pulley and flat belt. The oil expeller was operated by 13 hp engine that is available in the rural areas. First the engine was started and speed of the engine was adjusted so that the speed of the expeller was reduced to about 40 rpm. Then mustard seeds were fed into the feeding tray and delivered to the rotor casing to be crushed. Inside the rotor casing there was a spiral screw which moved the seed forward for pressing and oil was extracted from the seeds. Oil was collected below the rotor casing. When seeds were transformed into cake, it came out through the outer surface of the cone. The speed of the expeller was reduced gradually to 30-35 rpm for final extraction of oil. The partially crushed oil was fed 4-5 times until all extractable oil was extracted.

The moisture content of the seed was 12% (wb). Mustard seeds were very loose and some water was mixed with the seeds to make it sticky in some extent. The average engine and machine speeds were 1166 and 35 rpm, respectively. In first trial, expelling time was 31 minutes and it took 35 minutes to extract same quantity of mustard (4 kg) in second trial. Average 1.34 kg of oil (crude) was obtained from 4.0 kg of mustard. Therefore, average oil recovery was 33.50% that was higher than the oil recovery (25-30%) from commercial oil mill depending on the variety and moisture content. This may due to that extracted oil was weighed just after expelling, not filtered. The expelling capacity of the oil expeller for mustard was 7.30 kg/h. During operation of the machine some problems were observed. Stop of engine at lower speed and slippage of belt during running were the major problems. These problems may be eliminated by incorporating gear box in power transmission instead of belt pulley system. The machine will be modified with a gear box to avoid belt pulley system and tested for small and large sizes of oil seeds in the next year. The average engine and machine speeds were 1166 and 35 rpm, respectively. Average 1.34 kg of oil (crude) was obtained from 4.0 kg of mustard. The average oil recovery was 33.50%.
