Field Performance Evaluation of Hand Operated No-till Seeder for Crop Establishment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

No-till farming has many advantages in different ways. Less tillage of the soil reduces labor, fuel, irrigation and machinery costs. No-till can increase yield because of higher water infiltration and storage capacity, and less erosion. No-till farming can be more profitable if performed correctly with appropriate machinery. Li-seeder was a manual seeder for no-till planting developed by Conservation Tillage Research Centre, China. Two Li-seeders were collected from China Agricultural University, China in the year of 2013. To evaluate the field performance it was tested for maize (BHM-7) in research field of Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during April and May 2014.The performance of Li seeder was found good and detailed study will be made in next year.

Objectives:

a) To evaluate the field performance of hand operated no-till seeder (Li-seeder)

b) To modify the seeder if necessary.

Methodology:

The seeder consists of several parts such as handle, metering device, seed and fertilizer beaks, actuating pendulum, fertilizer bag, hose pipe etc. The total weight of Li Seeder was 2.2 kg. The machine was operated in the manner of a light hoe and the impact of the beak hitting the soil moves a pendulum which actuates the delivery mechanisms for seed and fertilizer. The seed hopper was the hollow handle of the planter, and fertilizer was carried in the operator’s back pack. Seed cells were interchangeable according to the crop being sown and the fertilizer rate was metered by an adjustable slide. Laboratory test was carried out to determine the seed rate, fertilizer rate, etc. To determine the field capacity the seeder was operated in a unit plot and time was taken. At that time depth of seed placement, no. of seed, fertilizer placement, seed covering etc. were also observed. Two Li-seeders were collected from China Agricultural University in the year 2013. To evaluate the field performance it was tested in research field of Farm Machinery and Postharvest Processing Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during April and May 2014.The plot size was 11 × 2.5 m. Twenty four plots were used and half of them were without any residue and other half were 30% residue of previous crop (wheat). The soil was sandy loam. Soil moisture was recorded before each treatment was carried out. Maize variety BHM-7 was sown in all the experimental plots with 60 cm row spacing (as recommended by BARI).There were 4 rows in each plot. The planting date was 7 April 2014. Weedicide (Gramoxone) was applied one week before planting. Three planting techniques were applied– (i) conventional planting, (ii) strip tillage with BARI seeder and (iii) Li seeder. Operating time was taken for sowing in each plot

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that for 30% residue in the plot conventional and strip tillage were hampered by entwisting the straws of wheat with the rotatory blade and shaft. It caused extra time for removing the straws from the shaft and ultimately decrease the field capacity. But for Li. seeder residue did not create such problem for operation. Considering seed placement and plant population data Li seeder performance is satisfactory. It can be a low operating cost seeder for the small farmers as it requires no fuel. Besides this another advantage of this machine was found that sub-soil fertilizer placement which can save fertilizer loss and assure efficient use of fertilizer. Observed data were not sufficient to recommend the Li. seeder for the farmers of Bangladesh. This experiment will continued in the next year.
