Status and Feedback of Selected BARI Developed Farm Machinery Available in Farmers’ Field

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted twenty upazilla of ten districts of Bangladesh to identify the status and problems in operation of BARI developed selected farm machinery in the farmers’ field. Field data were collected through field survey from 30 adopter and 30 non-adopter farmers from each of the upazilla using pre-tested interview schedule during the period of 2013-14. The socioeconomic profiles of adopter and non-adapter respondents in the study areas were found similar. Distribution of different BARI developed machinery in the study areas were not found uniform. The distribution of machinery was based on type of crops grown and degree of farmers acquainting through field demonstrations and training. Most of the machine owners used machine in their own field and rented to other farmers at custom hire basis. The rates of rent in all locations were found more than double of operating cost. Some problems faced by the users during operation of the machines. Some of the problems related to design the machine, manufacturing defects, improper operation and associated with the engine or motor. These problems may be eliminated by concerned group for smooth operation of the machines.

Objectives:

a) To identify the problems in operation of BARI developed selected farm machinery using in farmers’ field, .b) To find the impact of selected machines on socio-economic conditions of the farmers.

Methodology:

The locations were purposively selected because BARI developed farm machinery were distributed in these locations through government subsidy program under Farm Machinery Technology Development and Dissemination Project. The study area were selected same as the project area i.e. 20 upzilla of 10 Districts. Field data were collected through field survey from 30 adopter and 30 non-adopter farmers from each of the upazilla. Therefore, total numbers of adopter farmers were 600 and non-adopter farmers were 600. Data were collected by direct interviewing using pre-tested interview schedule during the period of 2013-14. BARI developed farm machinery used for different agricultural operations, their costs, advantages and problems in operation and other relative data were collected. Tabular method of analysis with descriptive statistics was used for analyzing and presenting data.

The numbers of adopter respondents in Sherpur (15) and Rangpur (54) were less than the designed respondents (60) because these two districts were newly included project areas and no farm machinery demonstrations were done and no BARI machinery were distributed there. Therefore available adopter respondents were found less there. Average ages of both adopter and non-adopter respondents were almost similar in the study areas. Level of education widely varied among the locations for both adopter and non-adapter responds. In case of adapter respondents illiterate group varied from 0-20% but it was 0-65% for non-adaptor respondents. However for both adapter and non-adapter respondents illiterate primary, secondary, higher, secondary and degree education groups were found very similar. Economic condition of a farmer is generally accessed by ownership of land. Cultivated land for both adapter and non-adapter respondents varied location to location. But average land size of adopter and non-adapter respondents were found almost same. Therefore, land size did not influence for adoption of BARI development machinery. The socioeconomic profiles of adopter and non-adapter respondents in the study areas were found similar. Distribution of different BARI developed machinery in the study areas were not found uniform.
