Regional Yield Trial of Hybrids of Tomato in Summer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study consisting of three hybrids and BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 as a check was conducted at three locations of BARI which include Joydebpur, Potuakhali and Akbarpur in the summer season of 2014-15. All the hybrids produced lower MF/Pl (19) than the check variety (22) when data of different locations was combined. It ranged from 14-27 across the locations. AvFtwt was much higher in all the hybrids (47.11-48.23g) except WS11 Hybrid 14 (38.60g) than the check variety (40.35g) at combined data. Two hybrids WS11Hybrid 2 and 3 produced higher yield (34.22-35.87t/ha) than the other hybrid (26.36t/ha) and check variety (32.52t/ha) at combined data. Among the hybrids, hybrid WS11Hybrid 3 produced maximum yield (35.87t/ha). Virus incidence was lower in all the hybrids (6.1-7.95%) than the check variety (22.08%). Incidence of bacterial wilt was 0.0% in all the test hybrids and the check variety. Considering all the parameters studied two hybrids, WS11 Hybrid 2 and 3 were found promising as summer variety which can be processed for release.

Objectives:

To select suitable hybrids of summer tomato with high yield, better quality and wide adaptability across the country.

Methodology:

The study consisted of three hybrids and BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 (summer variety) as a check. It was conducted at three locations of BARI which include Joydebpur, Potuakhali and Akbarpur in the summer season of 2014-15. Age of transplanted seedlings varied from 29-41 days at two locations. Seedlings were transplanted under transparent poly tunnels. The poly tunnels were 2.3 meter wide having two 1.0 meter wide bed with 30 cm drain in between. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with two replications. The plant spacing maintained 60 cm between rows and 40 cm between the plants within the row within the bed. The land was fertilized with cow dung, N, P, K, S, B and Zn @ 10000, 207, 90,125, 22, 0.34 and 5.40 kg/ha respectively. Half of the quantities of cow dung, P, B, S and Zn are to be applied during land preparation. The remaining half of cow dung, P, B, S and Zn; and 1/3rd of K are to be applied during pit preparation before 8-10 days of transplanting. The entire urea is to be applied in three equal installments at 20, 40 and 60 days after transplanting; and K two installments at 20 and 40 days after transplanting. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Measured characters were duration of fruit harvest, marketable fruits per plant (MF/Pl), average fruit weight (AvFtwt) in gram, marketable yield per plant in kg, marketable yield per hectare (MY/ha) in ton, total soluble solid in % (TSS) and locule number in fruit. For convenience, the data of all locations for three characters which include MF/Pl, AvFtwt and MY/ha were combined for interpretation. Data was recorded from 10 randomly selected plants per genotype per replication. No statistical analysis was done due to only three locations. Only mean of three locations was calculated.
