Comparative Profitability of Hybrid Rice and BRRI Varieties in Some Selected Favourable Environments in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in 2000 at Gazipur, Kishoregonj and Netrokona district to determine the comparative profitability of Hybrid rice (Alok 6201) and BRRI varieties (BRRI Dhan 29 and BR 14) under favorable environment. The total human labor for hybrid rice was higher than BRRI varieties. Cost of seed, fertilizer and insecticides were found higher for hybrid rice than BRRI varieties in the study area. Moreover, the total cost both on full cost and cash cost basis of Hybrid rice was found higher than BRRI varieties (BRRl Dhan 29 and BR 14). The yield of BRRI varieties (BRRl Dhan 29 and BR 14) were found less than hybrid rice, but the gross return and the BCR (benefit cost ratio) was found higher both on full cost and cash cost basis. Partial budgeting analysis was also found more profitable for growing BRRl Dhan 29 and BR 14 than Hybrid rice (Alok 6201) in the study area.

Objectives:

1. To determine the cost and returns of hybrid rice (Alok 6201) and BRRI varieties (BR 14 and BRRI Dhan 29) in the study area.

2. To compare profitability of hybrid rice (Alok 6201) and BRRI varieties (BR 14 and BRRI Dhan 29) in the study area.

3. To assess the policy implications on the basis of the research findings.

Methodology:

In total 222 samples were randomly selected from Gazipur, Kishoregonj and Netrokona districts, out of which samples, 40 for BR 14, 70 for BRRI Dhan 29 and 112 for Hybrid rice farmers were interviewed through a pre- tested and pre- designed questionnaire. Farmers were listed with the help of Ag. Extension personnel and data were collected just after harvesting the crop in the Boro season in 2000. Collected data were then summarized, tabulated and analyzed using by statistical technique in accordance with the objectives of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

The total human labor, yield, gross return and the cost of production of Hybrid rice (Alok 6201) were found higher, but the net return and BCR (Benefit Cost Ratio) were found lower than BRRI varieties (BRRI Dhan 29 and BR 14) on both full cost and cash cost basis. The production cost (Tk./kg) of BRRI varieties (BR 14 and BRRI Dhan 29) was less than hybrid rice 22% and 21% on full cost basis and 30% and 33% on cash cost basis. Partial budgeting analysis showed that the BRRI varieties (BRRI Dhan 29 and B R 14) was more profitable than Hybrid rice found in the study area.
