Argo-economic Analysis of Mv T. Aman Rice Cultivation Under Irrigated Condition in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The average sizes of small, medium and large groups of farms were 0.76 ha, 1.15 ha, and 2.16 ha, respectively. The small, medium, and large farms used 177.00, 155.00, and 180.00 man-days/ha and 50.14, 36.80, and 48.61 animal pair days/ha for MV T. Aman rice cultivation, respectively. The total cost of MV T. Aman rice cultivation by the small farms was Tk. 16764.00 and Tk. 9260.00 which was higher than the other two groups on both full cost and cash cost basis. The gross returns of small, medium, and large farms were Tk. 26598/ha, Tk. 26680/ha, and Tk. 30390/ha, respectively. As a result, the larger the farm size the higher is the net return as well as benefit cost ratio. Residual earned the highest share of outputs in the range of 38-47 percent under small, medium and large farms. Farmer earned 73-83 percent of the total income generated by land and family labor (both human and animal) from different categories of farms. Thus it is evident that the share of residual (goes to the operator) and share of income earned by the farmer increased with the improvement of management practices.

Objectives:

(1) To know the socio-economic profile of the farmers in the irrigated environment;

(2) To examine the existing management practices for MV T. Aman rice cultivation;

(3) To determine the profitability of MV T. Aman rice cultivation under different categories of farms

(4) To find out the factor share of output and income share among the rice growers.

Methodology:

Random sampling technique was followed to select the respondents. Out of 400 samples, about 100 farmers were selected randomly from four thana of four districts, Gazipur, Sylhet, Faridpur, and Patuakhali in T. Aman season in 1994 in the irrigated environment. These districts, thanas, and villages were purposively selected first. Twenty five samples ranging from 20 to 25 percent of the total samples from a village of each thana under each district were taken. Data was collected through a pre- designed questionnaire. Data were collected just after harvesting the crop. Selected samples were then grouped into small (0.02 ha to 1.00 ha), medium (1.01 ha to 2.00 ha), and large (2.01 ha and above) based on the farm size (operated land). Accordingly, 28, 36, and 36 samples were found under small, medium, and large farms, respectively. The collected data were then summarized, tabulated, and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Tabular method and accounts analysis technique have been followed in analyzing the data.

Achievement/Findings:

The large farmers applied higher rate of urea and MP but lower rate of TSP than the small and medium farmers. The small and large farmers used equal amount of human and animal labor for MV T. Aman rice cultivation. The highest cost was found under small farms followed by the large farms but the yield and gross returns, net returns as well as benefit cost ratio were the highest under large farms due to timely sowing and planting, line planting, top dressing and weeding, which were the main better management practices. The residual, which goes to the operator, earned the highest share of outputs for MV T. Aman rice under all three categories of farms while the human labor in all cases earned the second highest share of output in the irrigated environment. The factor share and income share by the residual which goes to the operator increased with the increase of farm size. The large farmer earned more of the total income than the small farmer. Thus the better the management practices for MV T. Aman rice cultivation the more is the income earned by the farmer himself.
