Comparative Economic Analysis of Aus Rice Cultivation Under Different Planting Methods in Some Selected Sites of Noakhali District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two hundred forty farmers were selected randomly from Feni and Sonagazi thana under Feni district. Common practice followed by farmers in these areas is the cultivation of local and modern Aus rice. Farmer practices dibbling, transplanting and broadcasting methods of rice cultivation. This study analyzed the comparative profitability among these three methods and also identify the constraints of growing Aus rice. It is found that in MV Aus rice cultivation, family labor use was the highest in dibbling. But in transplanting, hired labor use was the highest. Total labor use was higher in transplanting method compared to that of dibbling or broadcasting. Use of urea was also higher in transplanting compared to that in other two methods. The average gross return of transplanting was higher than that of dibbling or broadcasting. Similar result was found for LV Aus rice of the above three methods except the use of other fertilizers. The average net returns of MV Aus rice cultivation under dibbling method was higher than that of transplanting or broadcasting methods, while in LV Aus rice, it was higher in transplanting method compared to that in other two methods, on both full cost and variable cost basis. Major constraints faced by the farmers were high cost of fertilizer, irrigation/water problem and insect/disease problem which needs immediate attention to increase the productivity of rice in the area.

Objectives:

1. To know the socio-economic profile of Aus rice growers;

2. To determine the comparative profitability of Aus rice cultivation under different planting methods

3. To identify the constraints of growing Aus rice in the area.

Methodology:

The data for the study were collected from two thanas of Feni and Sonagazi. Initially two unions of Feni and three unions of Sonagazi were selected. Later two villages from two unions of Feni and three villages from Sonagazi were selected having discussed with the thana Agriculture officer. A sample of 80 farmers of transplanting, 80 farmers of dibbling, and 80 farmers of broadcasting from Feni and Sonagazi thana were chosen randomly. The sample farmers were further classified into LV and MV of the each method. The period of the study covered March to July 1993. Survey method was used to collect the data. Tabular technique as well as partial budgeting technique was employed to facilitate the descriptive presentation of the findings.

It can be concluded that in normal rainfall situation, MV Aus performed well under dibbling method, but LV Aus rice performed better in transplanting method. From the economic point of view, higher profit may also be obtained from growing MV Aus rice under dibbling method and LV Aus rice under transplanting method. Thus the farmers should be encouraged to grow MV Aus rice extensively under dibbling method or LV Aus rice under transplanting method. This should be ensured providing lower price of fertilizer which helps to grow more MV rice. Major occupation of the farmers was agriculture. The constraint faced by the farmers were high cost of fertilizer, irrigation and water problem, and insect and disease problem. Therefore, all the complimentary production inputs should be ensured for successful crop production.
