Use Efficiency and Effect of Urea Super Granules (usg) in Boro Paddy Cultivation in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Among the plant nutrient inputs, increasing the applied fertilizer nitrogen (N) use efficiency,since the most essential and limiting nutrient for rice cultivation is of crucial importance to undersatnd.This study was taken to assess the effectiveness of USG, in comparison with conventional Prilled Urea (PU), on Boro rice production in Bangladesh. The study, was conducted in seven upazilas under seven districts of Bangladesh with a total 534 farmer respondents (267 USG farmers and 267 PU farmers) and assessment done on the input use efficiency. The estimated average TE, EE and AE in paddy production by PU and USG farmers were 84.07% and 94.80%, 83.21% and 94.49%, and 98.95% and 99.65% respectively. Significant differences between PU and USG farmers were observed regarding TE and EE. The estimates of TE and EE showed that, there exists considerable room for improvement in the efficiency of Boro rice production using the existing level of resources and technology in both cases i.e. PU and USG. Using only USG instead of PU, farmers can increase TE and EE by a significant margin.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Considering the intensity of Boro rice cultivation and use of USG in Boro rice cultivation, seven districts, spreading all over the country, were selected so that the study area becomes representative of Bangladesh. The selected districts were Gazipur, Sherpur, Comilla, Sylhet, Dinajpur, Jessore and Barishal. Through discussion with the concerned DAE personnel, one upazila from each district, namely Kaliakoir, Sherpur sadar, Laksham, Sylhet sadar, Dinajpur sadar, Jessore sadar and Barishal sadar were selected as the specific sampling or study area. A total of 534 farmer respondents (267 USG farmers and 267 PU farmers) were selected for the purpose.Both tabular and functional analyses were carried out for input, output, return and profit based on input amount and price and production practices by sampling area and soil type. All the analyses were done for two groups of farmers,i.e by USG and PU farmers under various categories and sub-categories.

Achievement/Findings:

The empirical results indicated that the coefficients of urea, other fertilizer and irrigation cost were positive and non-significant. While coefficients of seed, total laborer and mechanical power cost were negative and not significant. It indicated that urea, other fertilizer and irrigation cost had positive and non-significant impacts on paddy production. The coefficients of seed, total laborer and mechanical power cost were found to have negative and non-significant impacts on paddy production application of USG through deep placement in boro rice cultivation was largely found effective in terms of major parameters like urea savings, yield increase, profitability increase and efficiency (technical, economic and allocative and in terms of some minor parameters also. The estimated average TE, EE and AE in paddy production by PU and USG farmers was 84.07% and 94.80%, 83.21% and 94.49%, and 98.95% and 99.65% respectively.
