An experiment was conducted to study the correlation and path analysis of the yield contributing characters of 46 ash gourd accessions at the Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Correlation coefficient indicated that yield plant-1 had highly significant and positive association with the number of fruits plant-1, average weight fruit-1 and vine length at the time of harvest. A negative association with sex ratio was also noticed. Path coefficient analysis showed that the number of fruits plant-1 and average weight fruit-1 directly contributed to the yield of ash gourd accessions and the flesh thickness indirectly effected yield. So, number of fruit per plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and vine length were the important characters for varietal selection of ash gourd.

The present study was undertaken to improve fruit yield of ash gourd using correlation and path analysis of yield and yield contributing characters of 46 ash gourd accessions found in Bangladesh.

The study was conducted under the Project of "Collection, Evaluation, Conservation and Utilization of Landraces and Wild relatives of some Important Vegetables and Fruits of Bangladesh (CVFB)" at the Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. In this experiment forty six ash gourd accessions were used as experimental materials which were collected by the (CVFB) project from different places of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. One accession represented one treatment and three pits were used each treatment and all the plants of a treatment represented one replication. The distance between pit to pit was 1.5 m and row to row was 2.0 m. The experimental bed was 4.5 m x 1.5 m in size. Bed was prepared at a height of 10 cm from the ground level in the experimental plot by spade. After bed preparation, the experimental plot was laid out and the pits were prepared with the help of Niri. Manure and fertilizers were applied in the experimental plot for ash gourd cultivation (Anonymous 1994). The seeds of different accessions were dibbled in the pit of raised beds. The seedlings were observed carefully. Different types of intercultural operations were done during the crop period. During growing period trellis and staking were provided and support was given to the plants by bamboo sticks to facilitate climbing up the plant easily and to protect the fruits from soil pathogens. The trellis also facilitated for easy harvesting of the fruits. Pests were controlled when needed. Green fruits were harvested one month regularly when they attained edible stage. Vine length at harvest, Number of flowers (male and female) per plant, Sex ratio (male: female), Fruit length (at green stage), Fruit diameter (at green stage), Fruit weight, Flesh thickness (at green stage), Fruits per plant, Yield per plant were recorded during the experimental period. Estimation of correlation coefficient Association of different characters under the study were analysed by working out simple correlation coefficient for all the possible pairs of character combination. Simple correlation co-efficient (r) among the important characters of ash gourd accessions were estimated.

The results of correlation coefficient analysis, yield plant-1 was significantly and positively correlated with average weight fruit-1, vine length and number of fruits plant-1 and also positively correlated with fruit length and diameter, flesh thickness but negatively correlated with sex ratio. Path coefficient analysis indicated that number of fruits plant-1 had maximum direct and positive effect on yield plant-1. The correlation of number of fruits plant-1 on yield plant-1 was also shown high and such high correlation with yield plant-1 was mainly due to the high positive direct effect on number of fruits plant-1 and considerable indirect effect via average weight fruit-1. The character average weight fruit-1 had also highly positive and direct effect on yield plant-1. This character' contributes indirectly to yield plant-1 via fruit length, fruit diameter, vine length and number of fruits plant-1. The result of the study also revealed that there was association of different yield contributing characters with the yield of ash gourd.
