Variability Study in Parental Lines and Hybrid Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for different characters of parental lines of hybrid rice at the experimental farm, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during July to December 2009. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that different cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS/A), maintainer (B) and restorer (R) lines differ significantly regarding all the characters studied. The high heritability (h²b) accompanied with high and moderately high genetic advance in percent of means (GAPM) were observed for days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, number of primary and secondary branches per panicle, grain yield and plant height of different CMS, maintainer and restorer lines which indicated the presence of additive gene effects of these characters. Grain yield was highly significant and positively correlated with plant height, days to maturity, number of primary and secondary branches per panicle of different CMS lines; plant height and number of secondary branches per panicle of different maintainer lines, and panicle length, number of secondary branches per panicle and number of filled grain per panicle of different restorer lines which indicated that yield could be increased by improving these traits of the parental lines.

Objectives:

The parental lines were taken to find out the extent of variability and the nature of gene action present in CMS, B and R lines separately so that better lines could be selected in hybrid combination to harvest better yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with 29 parental lines of hybrid rice, of which eight were Cytoplasmic Male Sterile (CMS/A), six were maintainer (B) and 15 were restorer (R) lines. The experimental plot was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Adequate soil fertility was ensured by applying additional quantities of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and ZnSO₄ @ 180-100-70-60-10 kg/ha respectively. Total TSP, MOP, Gypsum and ZnSO₄ were applied at final land preparation. As per recommendation the total Urea was split into three installments for application at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (Anonymous 2010). Healthy seedlings of 30 days old incase of A and B lines and 32 days incase of R lines were transplanted in separate strips of the experimental field. In each strip 20 X 20 cm spacing between plant to plant and row to row, respectively were maintained. The collected data for each character was subjected to the analysis of variance following the RCBD design. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), mean, range and variability parameters studied in this experiment were also estimated.

Achievement/Findings:

In cytoplasmic male sterile lines, maintainer lines and restorer lines difference between genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation were found in days to 50% flowering, days to maturity and plant height and high heritability (h²b) accompanied with high genetic advance in percent of mean were found in days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, number of primary branches per panicle, number of secondary branches per panicle, grain yield and plant height. The technology may need modification while applying in other region of the country. However, further studies are necessary to formulate at a concrete decision.
