The prevalence and seasonal variation in gastro intestinal parasites were studied in native (N = 312) and crossbred (N = 118) calves with four age groups (Up to 3 months, >3 to 6 months and >6 to 9 months and >9 to 12 months) and three seasons (rainy, autumn and winter). Among them 180 native and 60 crossbred calves were infected. The maximum rate of infection of gastro intestinal parasite was recorded in native calf with the exception of Trichuris. In the rainy season, the infection rates of Fasciola (18.08%), Bunostomum (16.39%), Trichuris (4.46%) and Schistosoma (9.69%) were highest in the age group >9 to12 months and lowest in the age group up to 3 months. The infection rates of Strongylid (6.6%), Strongyloides (7.23%), and Trichuris (4.46%) were very high in the age group < 3 to 6 months and low in the age group up to 3 months. The infection rates of T.vitulorum (43.6%), Strongylid (6.6%), Strongyloides (7.23%) and Schistosoma (9.69%) were very high in the age group up to 3 months and low in the age group >9 to 12 months.

This study was undertaken to observe prevalence of gastro intestinal parasites in calf.

Population: The study was conducted with 430 calves among them 312 were native and 118 were crossbreed calf which were selected randomly from Debiganj Upazila Veterinary Hospital of Panchagar District for a period of July 2009 to December 2009. Sampling: At first the calves were included in this study by observing clinical signs of parasitic infestation (Off feed, rough coat, poor body condition, pot belly, diarrhea and mandibular edema). According to their age, calves divided groups such as A up to 3 months, B up to > 3 months to 6 months, C up to > 6 months to 9 months and D up to > 9 months to 12 month respectively. During the study period all the data regarding to animals were directly collected from animal owner by cross-question. Coproscopic examination procedure: About 15 gm fecal materials were collected from each of the selected animals directly from the rectum or from freshly voided feces in polythene bags. The sample was stored in the refrigerator and was examined within 2-6 hours. At first the samples were examined for parasitic ova using direct smear method. Then from positive cases the numbers of eggs were counted by using “Modified Stoll’s Dilution Technique”. A 3 gm of feces were mixed well and put in 100 ml beaker containing 42 ml of water, some glass beads were added to it. Then it was thoroughly mixed with stirrer. A 0.15 ml was taken by a syringe and put on glass slide and covered with cover slip. The slide was placed under microscope and examined. The eggs were identified and counted on the basis of morphological features described by Soulsby (1982). The counts were made from each sample and the mean of it was considered as EPG (Eggs per gram of feces). From positive cases 30% samples were selected randomly and total EPG were determined.

The study revealed a high prevalence of T.vitulorum in calves in relation to ages, sexes and breeds in the study area. Parasitic infected mother likely to occur in new born calves. However, poor management, unavailability of drugs, lack of awareness of the farmers also enhance the high incidence of the infection. Gastro intestinal helminthiasis is the major cause of stunted growth of calves and may lead to death which intern results heavy economic loss. So preventive measures have to be under taken. Calves should be dewormed at regular within 7-14 days of age as preventive measures against gastro intestinal infection. Veterinary services as well as drugs should be available in hand. Management system and overall hygienic conditions should be improved for better growth rate of calves. This study may be extended in wider scale to other geo-physiology and socioeconomically at different areas of the country to verify and compare the results and to take necessary steps against gastro intestinal infection.
