Micro-studies on Ploidy Levels and Developing Seedless Guava

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of BAU and Horticulture Centre, Kewatkhali, Mymensingh to study the qualitative and quantitative characters of fruits of four guava germplasm. Fruit shape and size varied greatly among the guava germplasm studied. The fruit of Sayadee was pear-shaped (pitcher-like) while that of Kazipiara and Mukundapuri was globose, and that of Swarupkathi was obate. The largest fruit was produced by Kazipiara and the smallest fruit by Sayadee. The mean fruit weight varied from 71 to 457 g. The flesh colour of Sayadee was pink and that of other three germplasms was white. The texture of the flesh of Kazipiara was crispy and that of the other three was soft. The percentage of edible portion varied little among the guava germplasm under report.

Objectives:

i) To collect diverse germplasm of guava from home and abroad for evaluation.

ii) To study the chromosome number and ploidy levels of the collected guava germplasms.

iii) To identify and develop tetraploid (colchiploid) guava lines.

iv) To hybridize between tetraploid and diploid guava lines for developing triploid inbreds.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Horticulture Farm, Horticulture Departmental Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh and the Horticulture Centre, Kewatkhali, Mymensingh during the period from July 1993 to June 1994. The study was made on eight year old guava plants. Four varieties of guava namely, Sayadee, Swarupkathi, Mukundapuri and Kazipiara were included in this study. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Three plants of each variety received each treatment. Well decomposed cowdung @ 20 kg was applied to each plant. Chemical fertilizers @ 260g N from urea, 320g P₂0₅ from TSP and 260g K₂0 from MP were applied per plant per year in three equal splits in February, May and September. Data were recorded on number of fruits per plant, weight of fruit and marketable yield per plant. The collected data were statistically analysed and the mean separation was done by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of the present experiment it may be concluded that the Kazipiara was the best for its excellent size of fruit and crispiness of the flesh. Considering the taste of fruit and hardiness of seed Swarupkathi was superior to all other germplasm studied.
