Womens’ Socio-economic Status, Performances and Rearing Challenges of Goat at Hill Side Areas of Chittagong

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to get the detail picture on owner women’s’ socioeconomic status, performances and rearing challenges of goat in different hill side areas of Rangunia and Rawzan upazila of Chittagong from 15 January 2014 to 14 July, 2014.Data were collected from 90 women who had one or more mature goat to know the owners socioeconomic status and challenges of rearing goat, and, from 130 female goat, 65 Black Bengal Goat (BBG) and 65 Cross Bred goat (CBG), to observe the productive and reproductive performances through a pre-tested interview schedule. It was revealed that 46.67% women were in the age group of 31-50 years, 36.67 % were primary educated, 56.67% were house wife,77.74 % had up to 0.5 acres of land and 44.44 % with yearly income of 51-100 thousands represent the maximum of the respective categories. For productive performances, it was observed that average birth weight (kg), mature body weight(kg), milk production (lit./day) and lactation period(days) were 1.4, 17.7, 0.75 and 95 for BBG and, 1.7, 27.25,1.0 and 60.5 for CBG respectively. In case of reproductive traits, the average age at puberty, age of first kidding, kidding interval, gestation period and postpartum heat period were 190, 345, 175, 142 and 35.5 days and the litter size and service per conception were 1.99 and 1.15 for BBG whereas those were 200, 360, 250, 146 and 115.75 days and 1.5 and 2.5 for CBG respectively. The major problems of goat rearing were lack of grazing land, inadequate vet service and lack of credit facilities. The result clearly indicated that the reproductive performances of BBG were better than Crossbred goat. On the other hand productive performances were higher in cross bred goat. Grazing land became decrease for advanced population of this country. The area was a semi hilly area where the road and transport facilities are not available so that vet service does not easily reach to the people.

Objectives:

The study was under taken to assess the socioeconomic status of goat owners’ women and productive and reproductive performances of goat and problems of goat rearing in the study area.

Methodology:

A total of 90 women who had at least one mature goat and 130 mature female goat where equal 65 were from both BBG and CBG were selected from 15 January 2014 to 14 June, 2014 from some selective hill side highland areas of Chittagong district and data regarding the owner women’s socioeconomic status, productive and reproductive performances of goat, and challenges of goat rearing were collected. Socio-economic information’s were women’s literacy level, occupational status, land ownership pattern and yearly income of the family. The productive parameters were birth weight, mature body weight, milk production and lactation period and, the reproductive parameters were age at puberty, age at first kidding, kidding interval, gestation period, postpartum heat period, litter size and service per conception. Rearing challenges were the data focuses on the problems that the women faces or considered as constrain for goat rearing.

In conclusion, lower to medium class women with low literacy level were mainly involved in the goat rearing. Reproductive performances of BBG were better than CBG. On the other hand productive performances were higher in CBG and, lack of credit facilities and inadequate vet service are the major problems. In fact, women in our country belongs to conservative society who face different sorts of social obstacle to rear goat which rightly been reflected in this study. So, it is certainly necessary to minimize the constrains to facilitates the such income generating activities of rural women.
