Genetic variability, correlation of yield and yield contributing characters and coefficient of variance were observed in rapeseed or mustard to identify the suitable variety at Sylhet region. The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Research field of Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet, during the Rabi season of 2012 and 2013. Eight varieties and four lines of rapeseed/mustard viz. Improved tori, TS-72, BARI sarisha-8, BARI sarisha-9, BARI sarisha-12, BARI sarisha-14, BARI sarisha-15, Binasarisha-4, BC-05115 Y, BC-05117 Y, BC-05118 Y and Nap-205 were sown on November 27, 2012 and harvested during February 10-24, 2013. The varieties Improved tori, BARI sarisha-8, BARI sarisha-14 and BARI sarisha-15 produced the highest seed yields and 15% variation at genotypic and phenotypic level. Correlation between seed yield and yield contributing characters showed significant and positively correlated with number of siliqua/plant, 1000 seed weight, straw yield, plant height, biological yield and harvest index. Path coefficient analysis of different yield contributing characters showed biological yield contributed maximum to seed yield with the highest correlation. Correlation coefficient analysis of yield attributes had the highest and positive association with seed yield. So, Improved tori, BARI sarisha-8, BARI sarisha-14 and BARI sarisha-15 can be grown well in Sylhet region.

The present study was undertaken to find out the appropriate varieties from newly developed mustard varieties/lines; and to estimate their variation and relationship of different traits of rapeseed/mustard for better selection of variety for Sylhet region.

The experiment was conducted at Agronomy research field, Sylhet Agricultural University, under Agro-Ecological Zone of Eastern Surma-Kushiyara Floodplain (AEZ 20) during Rabi season. The soil of the experimental field was sandy loam in texture having fertility level low to medium and belongs to the “Khadimnagar” soil series with moderate organic matter content (1.45%), N 0.80%, K 0.07 m mol/100 g of soil, P was 25 μg/g of soil and S 10 μg/g of soil and pH 5.2. Eight varieties and four advanced lines of mustard viz., Improved tori, TS-72, BARI sarisha-8, BARI sarisha-9, BARI sarisha-12, BARI sarisha-14, BARI sarisha-15, Binasarisha-4, BC-05115 Y, BC-05117 Y, BC-05118 Y and Nap-205 were sown on November 27, 2012 and harvested during February 10-24, 2013. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. The experimental plots size was 4m x 2.5 m and seeds were sown in line with 25 cm row to row spacing and 5 cm plant to plant spacing. The plots were fertilized at the rate of 280, 180, 90, 160, 13 and 6 kg/ha of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum, boric acid and zinc sulphate (ZnSO4), respectively. During final land preparation, half of the urea with all other fertilizers were applied and rest half of the urea was top dressed at 24 days after seeding (DAS). Light irrigations were given at 20 DAS and 40 DAS. The crop was sprayed with Malathion 57 EC to prevent infestation of mustard aphids at siliquae formation stage. At maturity the crop was harvested from an area of 3 m2 (1 m x 3 m) from the center of each plots to get the seed yield. Prior to harvesting ten plants were randomly collected (uprooted) other than the harvesting area to get yield attributes. The collected seeds were sun dried to adjust seed moisture content of 8% and yield was converted in terms of t/ha from the yield of harvesting area. Data were analyzed by computer package program MSTAT-C and mean differences were adjudged by the least significant difference (LSD). On the other hand genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variations; heritability and genetic advance were estimated. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients were calculated and path coefficient analysis was done according to standard method.

The genotypic residual effect was 0.001799, which indicated that there were other responsible traits for contribution to seed yield per plants and oil concentration in mustard also varied among different entries, which were not taken into consideration in the present study. The path coefficient studies indicated that plant height, number of branches per plant and number of siliqua per plant were the most important contributors to seed yield per plant which could be taken into consideration in future hybridization programs. The variety Improved tori, BARI sarisha-8, BARI sarisha-14 and BARI sarisha-15 showed the highest seed yield. Considering the correlation coefficient analysis yield attributes had the highest and positive association with seed yield which indicates that the mention varieties could be successfully grown in Sylhet region.
