An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December, 2011 to observe the effect of seed rate in nursery bed and age of seedling during transplanting on the performance of BRRI hybrid dhan4. The experiment included 5 ages of seedlings viz. 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35-day old and 3 seed rates in nursery bed eg. 25, 50, 75g m-2. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Seed rate in nursery bed exerted significant effect on yield and yield contributing characters of BRRI hybrid dhan4. The highest number of total tillers hill-1 (12.91), number of effective tillers hill-1 (9.61), number grains panicle-1 (154.97), grain yield (5.02t ha-1) and straw yield (5.47 tha-1) were obtained from 25g m-2 seed rate in nursery bed. The highest panicle length (23.89cm) was obtained from 50g m-2 seed rate in nursery bed. On the other hand, the highest number of non-effective tillers hill-1 (3.85) and number of sterile spikelets panicle-1 (31.34) were obtained from 75gm-2 seed rate in nursery bed. Regarding the age of seedlings during transplanting 25-day old seedlings produced the highest number of total tillers hill-1, effective tillers hill-1, and lowest number of sterile spikelets panicle-1, highest number of grains panicle-1, highest grain yield and straw yield. The interaction of age of seedling and seed rate in nursery bed had significant effect on the production of number of effective tillers hill-1 and grain yield. The highest number of effective tillers hill-1 was obtained from 25-day old seedlings with 25g m-2 seed rate in nursery bed, which eventually resulted in the highest grain yield (5.49 t ha-1). The results suggest that use of 25-day old seedlings with 25 g m-2 seed rate in nursery bed may be practiced to obtain optimum grain yield of BRRI hybrid dhan4 during aman season.

The present study was undertaken to find of the effect of seed rate in nursery bed and age of seedling during transplanting on the yield of BRRI hybrid dhan4 during aman season.

This experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from the July to December 2011. The study included three seed rates in nursery bed viz., 25g m-2, 50g m-2 and 75g m-2, and five different ages of seedlings for transplanting such as 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35-day old. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The size of each unit plot was 2.0 m x 2.0m. Total number of unit plots was 45. The treatment combinations were allocated randomly in unit plots. BRRI hybrid dhan4 was recently developed by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, which gives yield 6.5 t ha-1, if care is taken properly. Seeds were collected from the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). Rice seedlings were raised in well prepared nursery bed. Pre-germinated seeds were sown as per treatment specification. Intercultural operations in the nursery bed were done as and when necessary. Seedlings of various ages as per treatment were uprooted carefully without causing any serious injury to the roots and transplanted on the same day in well puddled plots. The seedlings were transplanted maintaining a spacing of 20cm x 20cm with one seedling hill-1. The experimental field was fertilized with 150, 100, 70, 60 and 10 kg ha-1 of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively as per recommendation of BRRI. All intercultural practices were done as per recommendation and protection measures were taken as and when necessary. Maturity of the crop was determined when 90% of the seeds became golden yellow in color. One square meter area from each plot was randomly selected from central portion and harvested manually for recording grain and straw yields. Five hills were randomly selected from the rest portion of each plot for recording necessary data on different yield parameters such as numbers of total tillers hill-1, number of effective tillers hill-1, number of non-effective tillers hill-1, panicle length, weight of 1000 grains, grains panicle-1 and sterile spikelet panicle-1. Data recorded for yield and yield parameters were compiled and tabulated in proper form for statistical analysis. "Analysis of variance" was done with the help of computer package MSTAT program. The mean difference among the treatments was tested with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

It is evident from the study that seed rate in nursery bed and age of seedling during transplanting had significant influence on yield and yield contributing parameters of BRRI hybrid dhan4 either individually or in combination. The highest number of effective tillers hill-1 and highest number of grains panicle-1 were obtained from the use of 25g seeds m-2 in nursery bed along with the use of 25-day old seedlings for transplanting. As a result, the treatment combination eventually produced the highest grain and straw yields. So, it may be concluded that 25g m-2 seed rate in nursery in combination with 25-day old seedlings could be a good practice for obtaining optimum grain yield of BRRI hybrid dhan4.
