Genotype-environment Interaction in Maize Inbred Lines Using Ammi Model

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seventeen CIMMYT developed inbred lines along with one local inbred line BIL 28 were assessed genotype environment interaction (GEI) and stability for days to tasseling, days to silking, days to maturity, plant height, ear height and grain yield at three locations of Bangladesh (Gazipur,Hathazari of Chittagong, Ishwardi of Pabna) during rabi 2010-11. The AMMI model (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) was used to assess the additive and multiplicative effects of the interaction. Significant variation for genotypes (G), environment (E) and GEI were found for all the characters. The environment Gazipur was poor, Chittagong was moderate and Pabna was rich environments for tested maize inbred production. Considering the mean, bi and S²di three parameters, it was evident that all the genotypes showed different response of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Among the inbred E4, E7, E12, E13 and E14 exhibited higher grain yield, bi~1 and S²di~0 indicated that the inbred were stable across the environment. Considering the yield potentiality and stability parameter five inbred lines were found promising across the locations.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to test the performance of CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre) developed maize inbred lines, under different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh and select the better one(s).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at three locations of Bangladesh namely Joydebpur, Hathazari of Chittagong and Ishwardi of Pabna during the season of rabi 2010-11. Seventeen CIMMYT developed inbred lines and one local check namely BIL28 were evaluated at this study. Experimental seeds were sown at Joydebpur on 27 November, Hathazari on 01 December, and Ishardi on 02 December, 2010. Experimental design was alpha lattice with two replications. The unit plot size was maintained at 5.0m × 0.75m. Spacing was 75 × 20cm between row to row and hill to hill, respectively. After seedling emergence one healthy plant per hill was kept in a following proper thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 120, 80, 80, 20, 5 and 1 kg ha^-1 of N, P₂0₅, K₂O, S, Zn and B respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken as required. Two border rows were used for minimize the border effect. Data on days to tasseling, days to silking was recorded on whole plot basis. Ten randomly selected plants were used for recording observations on plant and ear height. All the plants in single rows were considered for plot yield. The grain yield (t ha^-1) data was assessed and corrected to 12% moisture. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used and the GE interaction was estimated by the AMMI model. In this procedure, the contribution of each genotype and each environment to the GE interaction is assessed by use of the biplot graph display in which yield means are plotted against the scores of the first principal component of the interaction (IPCA1). The stability parameters, regression coefficient (bi) and deviation from regression (S²di) were estimated. Significance of differences among bi value and unity was tested by t-test, between S²di and zero by F-test.
