Estimation of Yield Loss by Fusarium Moniliforme Caused Bakanae Disease of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bakanae disease of rice is an important disease. In Bangladesh, bakanae has considered as an uprising disease. The causal organism of this disease is seed borne, soil borne and also air borne. However, the infected seed plays an important role for disease development. The disease has been caused 3.7-70.00% yield reduction in different countries. To estimate the yield loss; experiment was conducted in naturally bakanae infected fields at Habiganj district during the year of 2010 and 2011 based on individual hill infection. The infected hill had 51.53 and 37.60% reduction in yield over its adjacent healthy hill for T. Aus and T. Aman seasons respectively. Relationship between bakanae incidence and yield loss indicate that each increase in the disease incidence resulted in a simultaneous reduction in yield. At lowest (3%) disease incidence the loss in yield was 1.32% and highest disease incidence it was as high as 22.64% in Aus season. Regression and correlation coefficient showed a highly significant positive correlation between disease incidence and losses in yield.

Objectives:

The present investigation was carried out to ascertain the extent of yield loss caused by the disease across the season and varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the naturally bakanae infected farmers field in Habiganj district during T. Aus and T. Aman season in 2010 and 2011. Yield loss was assessed in two different ways. Such as on the basis of hill infection and level of infection. On the basis of hill infection For estimating yield loss due to bakanae disease of rice based on hill infection, the highly susceptible rice varieties BR1 and BRRI dhan44 were grown in farmers field in T. Aus 2010 and T. Aman 2011 season. In this method fifty bakanae infected hills were randomly selected from the cropped area and labeled with number tag. For each infected hill, an adjacent healthy hill was also selected and labeled with appropriate tag to obtain a comparable pair of infected and healthy hills. Observation was taken on tiller number, panicle number and yield for individual hill at the maturity stage. On the basis of degree of infection percentage The experiment was conducted on the naturally bakanae infected farmer’s field in Habiganj district. In order to obtain varied level of disease incidence 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 infected hills per sqm were purposively selected. Finally, every sq.m area was marked with bamboo stick and properly labeled. Zero or no infected hill considered as control. Three individual fields were selected and each field considered as replication. Observations on disease incidence were recorded and percent disease in each plot area was calculated. The yield in the each plot was taken at maturity and percent yield losses were calculated at different levels of disease incidence. A regression analysis was done to find out the correlation between the disease levels and percent loss in yield using the following formula: Y= a+bx, Where - Y: estimated yield loss (%), a: regression line intercept (constant), b: regression coefficient and x: disease incidence

Achievement/Findings:

The results obtained in the present study offer positive indication that for viable management of this serious disease. Strategies should to be launched by integrating fungicidal seed treatment, host resistance and crop rotation.
