A filed experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Filed Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to determine the effect of rate and time of nitrogen fertilizer and their interaction on the growth and yield of BR26, a T. Aus rice variety. There were twenty treatment combinations consisting of five rates of nitrogen (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg N/ha from Urea) and four levels of time of nitrogen application replicate three times within a Randomized Block Design. The effect of nitrogen rate was significant for both the grain and straw yields. A significant interaction was observed on growth analysis parameters, yield and yield components except plant height. A significant interaction between rate and time of nitrogen application was observed in the application of 60 kg N/ha in three equal splits which produced the highest grain yield (3.64 t/ha). When no nitrogen was applied, grain yield response to nitrogen was very minimum. Nitrogen rate significantly influenced the growth analysis parameters viz. plant height leaf area index, crop dry matter and tillers/hill. Plant height and tillers/hill increased with increase in nitrogen rates increased up to 75 days after sowing and gradually thereafter. Nitrogen rate increased grain yield up to 60 kg/ha and no further response achieved. The rate of increase was much higher (40%) at 30 kg/ha of nitrogen compared to the control (1.95t/ha) and retarded 43% at 90 kg N/ha. On the other hand, straw yield increased up to 90 kg N/ha and decreased at 120kg N/ha. Of the yield components effective tillers/hill, number of the filled grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight increased significantly up to only 60 kg/ha of nitrogen. The treatment combination (N60T3), i.e., when 60 kg N/ha applied in 3-splits (33.3 % at seeding+33.3% at tillering+33.3% at panicle initiation stage) produced the highest grain and straw yield (3.64 and 4.06 t/ha, respectively). The results of the present investigation clearly indicate that a significant improvement in yield of BR26 is possible through application of 60 kg N/ha in 3 equal splits.

To investigate the effects of rate and time of nitrogen application on the growth and yield of aus rice variety BR26.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory. Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The locality where the experiment was conducted has a tropical monsoon climate characterized by heavy rain full during the month of April to September and scanty rain full during the rest period. The experiment was designed to study the effect of rate and time of nitrogen application in aus rice cv. BR26, a modern aus rice culivar, developed by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BARRI) was used in the experiment. The treatment were constituted and designated as follows: Factor A: Rate of nitrogen No - control (no N applied),  N30- 30kg N per hectare, N60 - 60 kg N per hectare, N90 - 90kg N per hectare, N120 - 120kg N per hectare. Factor B: Time of nitrogen application T1 - Single (one application) at seeding, T2 - 2-splits, 50% applied at seeding + 50% at tillering, T3 - 3-splits, 33.3% applied at seeding +33.3% at tillering +33.4% at panicle initiation. T4 - 4-splits, 25% applied at seeding + 25% tillering + 25% at panicle initiation + 25% at an anthesis. The levels of rate and time of N- applications were combined to form 20 treatment combinations. A Randomized Block Design with three replications was adopted for the purpose. The net size of each unit plot was 4m x 2.5m. The spaces between replications and between plots were 1.5m and 1.0m, respectively. Management practices - The land was first opened with a tractor drawn plough. Three ploughings followed by laddering were done with a country plough and ladder. Weeds and Stubbles were removed from the field as much as possible. Seeds were sown at 25 cm apart lines by using 75 kg seeds/ha. Seeds were covered with soil by hand after sowing. In addition to nitrogen a basal dose each of Triple Super Phosphate, Muriate of potash, Gypsum and Zinc Oxide at the rate of 90 kg, 60kg and 10 kg per hectare , respectively were applied in all plots. Nitrogen fertilizer in the form of urea was applied as per treatment used in the experiment. Weeding thinning, gap filling and other necessary cultural operations were done as and when necessary from time to time in order to provider conciliations for proper growth and development of the crop. Three hand weddings were required to First weeding was done on 15 DAS, followed by the second and third weeding on 31 DAS and 49 DAS, respectively. The crop was attacked by stem borers at the vegetative phase, which was successfully controlled by applying Diazinon 60E.C. at the rate of one litre per hectare. The crop was also attacked by rice hispa after 60 (DAS which was controlled by using one litre/ha of Dimecron 100 scw. Growth parameters such as plant height, LIA, tiller number, dry matter production etc, were determined on 50, 75, 100 and 110 days after sowing by taking ten plant samples from each plot measuring an area of 0.25m2. The data has been collected are : Plant height (cm),Number of total tillers/hill, Number of effective tillers/hill, Panicle length (cm), Number of filled grains/panicle, Number of unfilled grains/panicle, 1000-grain weight (g), Grain yield (t/ha) and Straw yield (t/ha). Analysis of Data - The collected data were analysed statistically following the ANOVA technique and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

The results of the present investigation clearly indicated that a significant improvement in yield of aus rice is possible through application of 60 kg N/ha in 3 equal splits i. e. 33.3% at seeding+33.3% at tillering+ the rest at panicle initiation.
