The experiment was conducted at the Seed Pathology Center (SPC) , Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensigh during July- November, 2001. The aim of the experiment was to determine the seed quality, germination category and rate of germination index of farmers’ saved seeds after 45, 90 and 120 days of seed storing in different containers. Three containers viz. kerosene tin, polyethylene bag and gunny were used for seed preservation. Seed samples of rice (var. BR 1) were collected from four upazillas of Bogra districts. In case of seed quality, the highest percentages of discolored and spotted seeds were found in polyethylene bag and it was 2.98-3.72% and 79.51-80.08% respectively. Significantly higher number of normal seedling (77.35%) was recorded when seeds of kerosene tin was tested and higher number of abnormal seedling (4.44%), diseased seedling (12.06%) and dead seed (15.88%)were found in seeds of guuny bag. The rate of germination index in the seeds of kerosene tin, polyethylene bag and gunny bag ranged 95.11-97.68%, 93.74-96.17% and 92.07-94.35% respectively.

To determine the seed quality, germination category and rate of germination index of farmers’ saved seeds after 45, 90 and 120 days of seed storing in different containers.

The experiment was carried out in the Seed Pathology Centre (SPC), Department of Plant pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during 2001. One rice seed sample (var. BR1) was collected from four upazillas of Bogra district, namely- Bogra Sadar, Sherpur, Kahaloo and Nandigram. The farmers were selected through a questionnaire among the 30 farmers of each village under each upazilla from the experimental site. Among the farmers, three farmers were selected from each village considering storage containers used by the farmers as well as the rice varieties cultivated by them. Among the different types of containers used by the farmers’ for storing seed, three types of containers viz. kerosene tin, polyethylene bag and gunny bag were selected after analyzing the questionnaire. The seed samples were collected thrice directly from the storage of the farmers. First collection was done in 1st July, 2001. The remaining 2nd and 3rd collection were done in 15th August and 1st October, 2001 respectively. The collected samples were stored in store room of the Seed Pathology Centre (SPC), Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Determination of seed quality, seeds were sorted manually to separate out the pure seed, best seed, spotted seed, discolored seed, partially filled grain, deformed seed, unfilled seed, varietal mixture, other plant parts, inert matter and insect damaged seed from the seed sample of 40 g working sample of original farmers’ stored seeds. Germination test of the collected seed sample was done in soil using tray method. Plastic trays (45cm x 22.50cm) were used for the purpose. 100 seeds were sown in mud in each plastic trays in four lines (25 seeds/line). For each sample altogether 400 seeds were tested for germination. Germination was recorded thrice at 4, 7 and 15 days after sowing. Normal seedlings, abnormal seedlings, diseased seedlings and dead seeds were counted separately and expressed in percentages. Rate of germination index (RGI) was calculated. The recorded data were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT C programme and means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

High percentage of discoloured seeds and spotted seeds were present in the farmers saved seed. From the purity test it was also revealed that recovery percentage of best seed was low in the farmers’ seed lot. Higher number of normal seedlings was recorded when seeds of kerosene tin were tested and higher number of abnormal seedlings, diseased seedlings and dead seeds were found in seeds of gunny bag. The rate of germination index was recorded highest in the seeds of kerosene tin, then polyethylene bag and lastly in gunny bag. So it could be concluded that storing of seeds in kerosene tin and polyethylene bag was found best and gunny bag was worst in respect of seed quality, germination category and rate of germination index.
