The Effect of Associated Salts on the Availability of Soil Phosphorus and Its Uptake by Rice Plants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was set in the Soil Science Green house of Dhaka University in 1964. Eight pounds of air dried soil were taken in each pot. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with 3 replications. Six different salts with 4 rates were included in the experiment. The treatment one received no salt while the other six treatments 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 received salts at the rates. The application of (NH₄)₂S0₄, K₂S0₄, CaS0₄, MgS0₄ increased the availability of phosphorus in soils and also increased the uptake of phosphorus by rice plants. The introduction of FeS0₄, A 12(S0₄)₃ availability of soil phosphorus and also decreased the uptake of phosphorus by rice plants. The addition of K₂S0₄ though decreased the availability of phosphorus in soils under water logged condition, but increased the uptake of phosphorus by rice plants. Potassium sulfate application decreased the availability of phosphorus. This was because that with potassium application, phosphorus uptake by rice plants was increased gradually. This in return decreased the level of available Phosphorus of soil. This result was also in agreement with the findings of others.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of (NH₄)₂S0₄, K₂S0₄, CaS0₄, MgS0₄, FeS0₄ and AI₂(S0₄)₃ on the availability of soil phosphorus and the phosphorus absorption by rice plants under water logged condition.

Methodology:

An experiment was set in the Soil Science Green house of Dhaka University in 1964. Eight pounds of air dried soil were taken in each pot. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with 3 replications. Six different salts with 4 rates were included in the experiment. The treatment one received no salt while the other six treatments 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 received salts at the rates. Phosphorus at the rate of 50 lbs per acre and the salts were thoroughly mixed with the soils seven days prior to seedling. Rice was planted on March 30, 1964 under water logged condition. Plant samples were taken at random from each pot on May 30, 1964. The plants were cut off at a level of 1 inch above the surface of the soil. About ten grams of soil were also collected from each pot on May 30, 1964. The soil samples, obtained from each pot, were air dried, ground and then screened to pass through a 2 mm sieve. The available phosphorus was determined by the modified method of Troug (13). 0.002N H₂S0₄ solution buffered to pH 3.0 with (NH₄)₂S0₄ was the extracting solution used. The soil solution ration was 1:100 and the extracting period was 30 minutes. Phosphorus in the extractant was determined colorimetrically. Plant phosphorus was also estimated colorimetrically following the method devised by Jackson.

Achievement/Findings:

The available phosphorus of the soils as affected by (NH₄)₂S0₄, K₂S0₄, CaS0₄, MgS0₄, FeS0₄ and A 12(S0₄)₃ under water logged condition is presented. The application of nitrogen in the form of (NH₄)₂S0₄ gradually increased the available phosphorus content of the soil under water logging condition. It was concluded that physiologically acid ammonium sulfate increased the solubility of phosphorus and thus its availability was increased. Potassium sulfate application decreased the availability of phosphorus. This was because that with potassium application, phosphorus uptake by rice plants was increased gradually. This in return decreased the level of available Phosphorus of soil.
