Ecofriendly Pest Management of Tea in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A proactive and holistic pest management approach, the integrated pest management (lPM), has been emphasized. This in particular is being applied in determining pest control strategies for economic cultivation of present day Bangladesh tea. Use of varietal resistance has been duly considered as a pest control option for all the four major pests discussed here. A decision profile for termite management was formulated in the purview of "eco-management" concept of pest control strategies. For Helopeltis management the day-to-day variable climatic conditions, such as cloud coverage, were found relevant. Sometimes ecological or environmental conditions in the niches of plantations may aggravate the situation of pest infestation. In such situations only the resistant varieties are to be preferred even by compromising on certain negative traits for yield or quality. For scheduling effective control of Helopeltis, timely application of chemicals, method of spraying and interval between two immediate rounds of spraying were also found very important. For successful red spider mite control, various methods e.g., trap crops, weeds, soil acidity, limited use of particular pesticides and their judicious application and cultural practices are highlighted. In nematode control, cultural practice of soil improvement by planting certain green crops was emphasized in particular.

Objectives:

To discuss the present topic of ecofriendly pest management practice, ecological approaches of only four major pests of tea, (a) termite, (b) Helopeltis, (c) red spider mites and (d) nematodes, were chosen.

Methodology:

In this review paper, details information are given on the following headings- A. INTRODUCTION: 1. Ecosystem status of tea pests; 2. Common tea pests in Bangladesh; B. ECOFRIENDLY APPROACHES FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF FOUR MAJOR PESTS OF TEA IN BANGLADESH: 1. Helopeltis-(a) Climatological factors and Helopeltis infestation, (b) Resistance of BT clones to tea mosquito bug, 2. Red spider mite (RSM)-(a) Major reasons for mite pest outbreak, (b) Special attention for RSM, (c) Persistence of RSM during cold weather, (d) Cultural control of mites, (e) Chemical control, (f) Minimization of RSM in nursery, 3. Termite-(a) Host plant resistance to termite, (b) Threshold decision process of termite, (c) Mechanical control methods of termite-mound digging process, (d) Destruction of termite colony by pesticide mixture, (e) Field testing device: Use of food traps to monitor termite population, (I) Ash and carbofuran application in planting pit; 4. Nematode and CONCLUSION.
