The field experiment was conducted at the Pulse Research Centre, Ishurdi during Rabi season of 2013-14 to evaluate the effect of seed rate on yield of lentil: a functional analysis. The treatment was eight seed rates like 15,20,25,30,35,40,45 and 50 kg ha-1 and lentil variety was BARI Masur 7. Seed rate showed positive effects on all the yield contributing parameters. Used 40 kg ha-1 lentil gave the higher seed yield (2266 kg ha-1) of lentil followed by 45 kg ha-1 (2153 kg ha-1) the lowest seed yield of lentil (1354 kg ha-1) was recorded in the 15 kg ha-1. The negative biological value (lentil yield) is not accepted in the case of biological parameters. Estimated seed rate would be 34.78 kg ha-1 and seed yield would be 2152 kg ha-1 through developed functional model.  The highest gross return (Tk. 135440 ha-1), gross margin (Tk 91840 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (3.09) was obtained from 40 kg ha-1 lentil.

The present study was planned to effect of seed rate on lentil yield: A functional analysis.

A field experiment was conducted at PRC, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi season of 2013-14 to find out the effect of seed rate on lentil yield. The treatments were eight seed rates i.e. 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 kg ha-1. The variety was BABI Masur 7. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 2.4m. The soil was sandy loam having pH 7.5. Soils were collected before sowing for moisture analysis. The sowing date was 11, November 2013. Fertilizers were used as 20-40-20 NPK kg ha-1 respectively. Three times fungicide spray, two times insecticide spray and weeding were done as per requirement. The crop was harvested on 10 March, 2014. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and seed yield (kg ha-1) was recorded from whole plot after harvest. All types of variable production costs were recorded to find out the gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio. The recorded data were analyzed statistically and means values were separated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

In case of seed rate, all the yield contributing characters highly significant with seed rate of lentil. The highest plant population (155) was obtained from 50 kg ha-1 followed by 45 kg ha-1 and the lowest value was found in 15 kg ha-1.  The highest branch per plant (32) and pod plant-1 (164) was found in 15 kg ha-1 where the lowest (19) was noticed in 50 kg ha-1. The highest 1000 seed weight (23g) was found in 40 kg ha-1 and the lowest (19.33) was obtained from 15 kg ha-1 . The highest yield (2264 kg ha-1) was recorded from 40 kg ha-1 and the lowest yield (1354 kg ha-1) was found in 15 kg  ha-1. Ascending order trained stover accumulation was found in different seed rates of lentil. The highest stover accumulation (5190 kg ha-1) was obtain from 40 kg ha-1 seed rate followed by 45 kg ha-1 seed rate and the lowest stover accumulation (3519 kg ha-1) was noticed by 15 kg ha-1 seed rate of lentil. The highest gross return (Tk 135840 ha-1), gross margin (Tk 91840 ha-1) and BCR (3.09) was obtained from 40 kg ha-1 and the lowest gross return (Tk 81240 ha-1) gross margin (Tk 40990 ha-1) and BCR (2.02) was found in 15 kg ha-1 respectively. Regression analysis was done to determine the relationship between seed rate and seed yield of lentil. A highly significant (*p = 0.01) polynomial and positive relationship between seed rate and seed yield of lentil was found. Yield response of lentil to applied seed rate can be expressed by the regression equations Y= -214.58 +136.06 x–1.956 x2 (R2 = 0.75). The equation explained that lentil yield could be increased at the rate of 136.06 ~ 136 kg ha-1 with an increase of 1 kg ha-1 seed rate.

The highest yield was found in lentil at 40 kg ha-1. The highest gross return (Tk. 151800 ha-1), gross margin (Tk 97800 ha-1) and BCR (2.81) were obtained from 40 kg ha-1. The highest dry matter accumulation (5.19 t ha-1) was obtained from 45 kg ha-1 seed rate.
