A 74 days experiment was conducted from 22nd July to 03rd October, 2012 into hapas to evaluate the growth performances of goldfish (Carassius auratus) fry with different levels of vitamin C supplementation in diets. The size of the experimental hapas was 3ft ×1.5 ft×2 ft with 1 mm mesh net. There were four treatments named Control (without vitamin C), Treatment-1 (1000 mg vitamin C per kg feed), Treatment-2 (1200 mg vitamin C per kg feed) and Treatment-3 (1400 mg vitamin C per kg feed). Each of the treatments ran in triplicates. Feeding frequency in all treatments were 3 times a day. For each treatment seven days old 20 fries with initial weight of 0.0140 g were stocked. At the starting of the experiment, fry were fed at the rate of 120% of their body weight and gradually decreased with increasing body weight. Sampling was done at seven days interval to adjust feed rates at 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, 15% and 10% of their body weight up to the end of the experiment. The growth performances such as mean final weight (g), mean weight gain (g), percent weight gain (%), specific growth rate (%/day), and survival rate (%) were significantly higher in Treatment-3 compared to other treatments. The highest FCR was obtained in Control and lowest FCR was obtained in Treatment-3. The better utilization of feed i.e the best food conversion ratio (FCR) was found in Treatment-3. The water quality parameters were monitored at 7 days interval and all the values were within the acceptable and suitable range for Goldfish culture. So the findings of this experiment revealed that the best growth performances and survival rate obtained from supplementation of 1400 mg vitamin-C per kg containing diet.

1. To observe the effect of vitamin C on the growth and survival of goldfish (Carassius auratus) fry reared in hapas.
2. To recommend suitable level of vitamin C for growth and survival of goldfish fry.

Description of the study area: A 74 days experiment was conducted from 22nd July to 03rd October, 2012 in hapas. The experiment was set in the south-west side of the Fisheries Faculty Building, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The hapas were set in a pond of 2 decimal. Depth of the pond was 1.5 m. There were facilities for adding water into the pond from a deep tube well. The pond was covered by net and exposed to sunlight. Construction of hapas: Hapas were made up of high density polyethylene (HDPE) net. Each hapa was rectangular in shape and 3ft × 1.5ft × 2ft in dimension with 1mm mesh size so that fish and food cannot be escaped from the hapa. Installation of hapas into the pond: At first several bamboo poles were inserted into the pond bottom. Then the hapas were tied fixed with the bamboo poles at the time of suspension. The opening of each hapa was covered by a long nylon net of 1 mm mesh size to prevent entering of unwanted fish or other harmful animals into the hapa. 1ft of the upper portion of the hapas was always kept above the water level. The experiment was monitored regularly so that the hapas did not touch the pond bottom. Design of the experiment: The experiment was conducted in 12 hapas under four treatments named control hapa (without vitamin c), Treatment -1 (1000 mg vitamin C per kg feed), Treatment- 2 (1200 mg vitamin c per kg feed), & Treatment- 3 (1400 mg vitamin c per kg feed). Each treatment ran in triplicates. Stocking of goldfish for breeding: Broods of goldfish (C. auratus) were selected from the stock tank behind the Fisheries Faculty Building and stocked in a hapa for breeding. After breeding, fertilized eggs were transferred to another hapa for hatching and reared there for six days. Collection of goldfish fry and stocking into the hapas: Seven days after hatching goldfish fries were collected from the hapas and weighed in the Nutrition Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with the help of an electric balance (METTLER PJ 3000). Initial weight of 7 days old fry was 0.014 g. After weighing, fries were acclimatizing with the pond water for half an hour and then released in the experimental hapas. Fries were stocked at the rate of 20 per hapa i.e. 78 fries per cubic meter of water. Preparation of vitamin C containing diet: Commercial feed named “Mega feed” was collected from Shombhugonj, Mymensingh. Then the proximate composition of Mega feed was analyzed in the Nutrition Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. For the preparation of vitamin C containing diet, vitamin C tablets were collected from the local market and weighed. Weight of each tablet was 0.92g and each tablet contains 250mg AA. Then AA was grinded and mixed with powdered mega feed. For control hapas vitamin C was not mixed with feed. Vitamin C was mixed at the rate of 1000 mg per kg feed, 1200 mg per kg feed and 1400 mg per kg feed in Treatment 1, Treatment 2 and Treatment 3 respectively. Feeding of goldfish fry: At first required amount of feed for each hapa were weighed and divided into three parts. Then each parts of powdered form feed was supplied into hapas directly by hand without any feeding trays. Fries were fed 3 times daily at 8.00 am, 12.30 pm and 5.00 pm. After initial sampling fries were fed at the rate of 120% of their body weight and then at seven days interval gradually decreased to 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, 15% and 10% with increasing body weight. Sampling of goldfish fry: Every seven days interval goldfish fries were sampled by using scoop net and weight of the goldfish fries were recorded by using electric balance (METTLER PJ 3000) in the Nutrition Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. For weighing Goldfish fries 5 goldfish fries were collected from each hapa very carefully to avoid any handling stress. Measurement of the growth performances of goldfish fry: To measure the growth performances of goldfish fries the following parameters were used: • Mean weight gain (g) • Percent weight gain (%) • Specific growth rate (SGR % per day) • Food conversion ratio (FCR) • Survival rate (%). Measurement of water quality parameters: Water quality parameters like, Temperature, Transparency, pH, Total ammonia, Nitritrite, Nitrate, Phosphate will be measured. Statistical analysis: The data obtained on the growth performances of goldfish, FCR and survival rate were statistically analyzed to see whether the influence of different treatments on these parameters were significant or not. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was done with the help of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).

Diet containing supplementation of 1400 mg vitamin C per kg feed enhanced better growth and survival of goldfish fry. Thus, the feed containing supplementation of 1400 mg vitamin C per kg feed would be recommended for the goldfish fry rearing.
