The study was conducted to find out the appropriate stages of maturity, the effect of different postharvest treatments on the shelf life of pineapple and select suitable storage methods to extend the shelf life. An experiment was carried out in the laboratories of the Department of Horticulture and Biochemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period of June to September 2007. The fruits of two maturity stages, viz. premature (10 days before optimum maturity) and optimum maturity were harvested and placed in the laboratory room, on the same day giving six postharvest treatments, viz. control, fruits treated with GA3 100, 200 and 300 ppm, 50 ppm GA3 + 50 ppm NAA and covered with straw. The two factor experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. There was significant variation between the stages of maturity (premature and optimum mature) in relation to fruit characteristics. The result revealed that premature fruits had longer shelf life (24.27 days) than the optimum mature fruits (21.27days). On the other hand the treatment GA3 200 and 300 ppm extended shelf life of pineapple by 15 and 19.5 days, respectively, under normal condition. Optimum mature fruits had higher dry matter content (21.79%), edible portion (66.57%) and total sugar (14.24%) than the premature fruit. The premature fruits showed higher weight loss (15.70%) and ascorbic acid (21.05%) during entire period of storage

The experiment was carried out in the laboratories of the Department of Horticulture and Biochemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period of June to September 2007. Pineapple (Giant kew) was selected as experimental materials for investigation of the experiment. The experiment consists of two factors like maturity stages and different post-harvest treatments. The fruits were harvested at two distinct maturity stages that were Premature (M1): Fruits harvested 10 days before attaining optimum maturity, and Optimum maturity (M2): Fruits harvested after attaining optimum maturity. The postharvest treatments were Control, (T0), GA3 100 ppm (T1), GA3 200 ppm (T2), GA3 300 ppm (T3), GA3 50 ppm + NAA 50 ppm (T4) and Covered with straw (T5). The two factor experiment was laid out in the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. For each replication of a treatment combination there were 10 fruits. Two of them were kept to record shelf life, change in weight, color and other external fruit characteristics. The remaining 8 fruits were kept for recording in edible portion, ascorbic acid content, total titratable acidity, pH, sugars and TSS of the fruit juice the periodically at 4 different dates (at 4 days interval, one fruit from each replication of a treatment combination were chemically analyzed) on the changes. The following parameters were studied. Percent weight loss of fruit, Moisture content, Edible portion,  were calculated by using the formula. TSS content of fruit pulp: The total soluble solid (TSS) content of pineapple fruit was estimated by using Abbe Refractometer. Ascorbic acid content of fruit pulp: Ascorbic acid in fruit pulp was estimated by using 2,6-Dichlorophenol-Indophenol visual titration method . Sugar in fruit pulp: Sugar content of fruit pulp was determined by following procedure described. Shelf life: The shelf life was recorded by counting the days required to attain the last stage of ripening, but the fruit remaining still ready for marketing. Statistical analysis: The recorded data obtained for different parameters were statistically analyzed using MSTAT computer package program (software) to find out the significance of variation resulting from the experimental treatments. Analysis of variances (ANOVA) for different parameters were performed by “F” variance test. The difference between the treatment means was compared by least significant difference (LSD) test.

The fruits treated with GA3 at 200 and 300 ppm showed highest moisture content, edible portion, pulp to peel ratio, TSS, ascorbic acid and sugar contents which are desirable characteristics of quality pineapples. The result also revealed that premature fruits had longer shelf life (24.27 days) than the optimum mature fruits (21.27days). The treatment GA3 at 200 and 300 ppm extended shelf life of pineapple by 15 and 19.5 days, respectively, where as it was 14 days in control. Therefore, GA3 200 and 300 ppm may be recommended for prolongation of storage life and improvement of fruit quality.
