Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

A study was conducted on the osteology of Labeo rohita in Mymensingh. The experiment were done in the Field laboratory Complex of the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. To study osteology of Rui fish, need to good quality, healthy and fully matured Rui fish. Rui was collected from various sources. Some Rui fish were collected from local market. For studying osteological feature of Rui fish, these fish were washed well in tap water. Then took a large steel bowl with tap water and then these fish were kept in bowl. Fish with bowl water were boiled for 20 minutes. Then these fish were kept on the tray for collecting total fish skeleton. Fish muscle were detached from fish from bone using forcep tissue carefully. When some bones were detached from main vertebrae, these bone were joined by using gum. The fish skeletal structure were kept in the room temperature for gentle air dry. The finding were counting all bones of Rui fish, there were 13 dorsal fin, 12 caudal fin, 6 anal fin, 6 first caudal vertebrae, 11 typical vertebrae, 11 typical trunk vertebrae, 6 branchiostigal ray, 10 pelvic fin, 8 pectoral fin. Lateral line with 42 scale, extends from anterior to the posterior end of the body. Stream lined vertebrae column having 35 vertebrae follows the pattern of body shape. The finding from the current study will help to broaden our understanding of the bone structure, sizes and shape of Rui fish and would extend the knowledge of rui osteology and the nature of bone and their structure.

I. To understand the major structure and formation of the fish skeleton.
II. To understand the different types of bones found in Rui fish, L. rohita.

Collection of samples: To study osteology of Rui fish need to good quality, healthy and fully matured Rui fish. Rohu were collected from various sources. Rui fish are found manily fresh water such as river, pond, beel, lake etc. Local fisherman or fishers are catches fish from these sources. To get healthy and disease free fish are found in the river, beel, lake an natural waterbody. Rui fish are collected from local market. Species: Rui fish is the most preferable for the osteological study of rohu fish. Some Rohu fish are collected from local market. Material used for the experiment: There are some instrument used for the experiment such as steel bowl, forceps, needle, cotton, metallic tray, tissue, gum etc.  Sample preparation: For studying osteological feature of Rui fish, at first these fish were washed well in tap water. Then fish was taken in a large steel bowl with tap water and then these fish were kept in bowl. Fish with bowl water are boiled 20 minutes. Then these fish were taken in the tray for collected total fish skeleton. Fish muscle were detached from fish from bone using forcep tissue carefully. When some bones were detached from main vertebrae, these bone were joined by using gum. The fish skeletal tructure were kept in the room temperature for gentle air dry.  Location of experimental work: These experiment was done in the laboratory condition, at the fish disease laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture, BAU, Mymensingh. Duration of work: The work was very carefully and slowly done to get material intact and to have good idea on the arrangement of bones. So it took about one week to complete the experiment. However, several fishes were used initially as trial and their technique was developed for the experiment. Counting of vertebrae or other bones: Researcher was counting all bones of rui fish. There were 13 dorsal fin, 12 caudal fin, 6 anal fin, 6 first caudal vertebrae, 11 typical vertebrae, 11 typical trunk vertebrae, 6 branchiostigal ray, 10 pelvic fin, 8 pectoral fin. Lateral line with 42 scals, extends from anterior to the posterior end of the body. Body scale are equal in size. Stream lined vertebrae column having 35 vertebrae follows the pattern of body shape and run from anterior to the posterior end of the body. Air bladder is bi-lobed. Anterior lobe is large and posterior is tubular and elongated.
