Regional Yield Trial of Hybrids of Tomato in Winter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study with four hybrids and BARI Hybrid Tomato 5 as a check variety was conducted at five locations of BARI which include Joydebpur, Ishwardi, Jamalpur, Potuakhali and Thakurgaon in the winter season of 2013-14. The test hybrids were similar for their response to marketable fruits per plant (MF/Pl), average fruit weight (AvFtwt), and marketable yield per hectare (MY/ha) when data of all the locations were combined (P>0.05). MF/Pl varied from 26 (W11Hybrid 33) to 42 (WS11Hybrid 1) at combined data while it ranged from 19-68 across the locations. Three test hybrids WS11Hybrid 1, W11Hybrid 35 and 37 had higher MF/Pl (31-42) than the check variety (30) at combined data. AvFtwt was higher in three hybrids W11Hybrid 33, 35 and 37 (98.6-111.1g) than the check variety (85.5g) at combined data. All the test hybrids produced higher yield (78.4-92.3 t/ha) than the check variety (73.2t/ha) at combined data. W11Hybrid 35 always gave higher yield (75.9-142.8 t/ha) than the rest of the hybrids including check in almost every location. All the hybrids including check variety were resistant to virus disease (5.7-22.2% incidence) while one (W11Hybrid 33) moderately resistant (MR) (34% incidence) under field condition. Performance of two hybrids W11Hybrid 33 and 35 was good for taste. Considering MF/Pl, AvFtwt, MY/ha, virus reaction and organoleptic taste three hybrids, hybrid 33 and 35, 37 were found promising as variety. All the hybrids may be put into regional yield trial for the 2nd year for confirmation of the result.

Objectives:

To select suitable hybrids with high yield, better quality and wide adaptability across the country.

Methodology:

The study consisted of four hybrids and BARI Hybrid Tomato 5 as a check. It was conducted at five locations of BARI which include Joydebpur, Ishwardi, Jamalpur, Potuakhali and Thakurgaon in the winter season of 2013-14. Age of transplanted seedlings varied from 25-36 days at different locations. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The plant spacing maintained 60 cm between rows and 40 cm between the plants within the row in the bed. The land was fertilized with cow dung, urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate @ 5000, 450, 350, 200, 90, and 10 kg/ha respectively. Half of the cow dung and MP; entire amount of TSP, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The remaining amount of cow dung was applied in pit. Urea and the rest of MP were applied in three equal installments as top dressing at 20, 40 and 60 days of transplanting. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Measured characters include days to 50% flowering, flower per cluster, fruit per cluster, duration of fruit harvest, marketable fruits per plant (MF/Pl), average fruit weight (AvFtwt) in gram, marketable yield per plant in kg, marketable yield per hectare (MY/Ha) in ton, total soluble solid in % (TSS), locule number in fruit, virus incidence (VI) and virus reaction. For convenience, we combined the data of all locations for three characters which include MF/Pl, AvFtwt and MY/ha for interpretation. Data was recorded from 10 randomly selected plants per genotype per replication. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mean separation of genotypes were done using Tukey’s test through one-way ANOVA in MINITAB statistical software (version 15, Minitab Inc, State College, Pennsylvania, USA). Data on organoleptic taste of the hybrids was rated using a 1-5 scale in which 1=taste is not acceptable, 2=average taste, 3=good taste and 4=very good taste. Every variety was evaluated by 11-13 scientists for taste. This data was analyzed through Non parametric Kruskal-Wallis test in the same soft ware.

Considering MF/Pl, AvFtwt, MY/ha, taste and virus reaction three hybrids, hybrid 33, 35 and 37 were found promising as variety. All the hybrids may be put into regional yield trial for the 2nd year for confirmation of the result.
