Development of Sweet Pepper Hybrids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

From the past year results, five parents of sweet paper were selected into a hybridization programme for the development of sweet pepper hybrids at the farm of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during last rabi season of 2013-2014. The highest number of crossing was possible in case of C4 (P1 X P5) occupied the best position in respect to fruit setting (92.30%) followed by C10 (P4 X P5) as 90% compared to others. Most of the combinations attributed to more than 45% fruit set. The lowest performance was noticed in case of C7 (P2 X P5) cross combination to fruit setting (48.38%).

Objectives:

To develop sweet pepper hybrids.

Methodology:

The study consisted of five variable parents with respect to desired quantitative and qualitative traits. The parents include ISPN 9-2 (P1), ISPN 9-5 (P2), Yellow Star (P3), BARI Mistimorich1(P4),and California Wonder (P5). Seeds were sown on November 15th in polybag and 30 days old seedlings were transplanted in the crossing block maintaining 50X40 cm spacing. The plot dimension was 4x2 m. Plants show different deficiency symptoms against nutrients. The crop was fertilized with cowdung 10 t/ha, urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum and ZnO @ 217, 333, 200, 111 and 5kg/ha respectively. Half of the quantity of cowdung was applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of cowdung, the entire quantity of TSP, ZnO, gypsum and one third each of urea and MoP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of urea and MoP were applied in two equal splits, 25 and 50 days after transplanting in the main field . Irrigation along with other intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Number of crossing and % fruit set per plant data was recorded.

In the study, total number of crossing was highest (59) in case of the C5 (P2× P3) cross combination followed by the combination C1(39) whereas the cross C4 (P1X P5) occupied the best position in respect to fruit setting (92.30%) followed by C10(P4X P5) as 90% compared to others. Most of the combinations attributed to more than 45% fruit set. The lowest performance was noticed in case of C7 (P2X P5) cross combination to fruit setting (48.38%). The F1 seed from the retained fruits were collected for heterosis study in the next year. It was revealed that hybrid of any crop would be the best performer if the parent’s combination could be selected wisely. So to get a concrete result, the study will be continued with some better parents and the heterosis study of the F1 seed will be done in the next year.
