Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three-hundred fifty elite wheat genotypes selected for mega-environment, these genotypes received through CSISA project of CIMMYT, Mexico were evaluated at the Wheat Research Centre (WRC), Dinajpur. Widely used variety Shatabdi as check was used at each 20 genotype interval starting from beginning. The genotypes were evaluated for yield, date of heading, plant height, Bipolaris leaf blight and spike sterility, tolerance to leaf rust resistance, physical grain characteristics etc. On the basis of overall performance 16 genotypes were selected for further evaluation in heat tolerant trial in next year.

Objectives:

To select elite promising wheat genotypes from International Bread Wheat Screening Nursery for Bangladesh environment.

Methodology:

The trial consist of 350 genotypes including local check BARI gom 21 (Shatabdi) was conducted in Wheat Research Centre, Dinajpur. The nursery was non-replicated. Each entry was sown on 28 November 2013 in 2.5m long 2 rows with row spacing of 20 cm and 40 cm between plots. Recommended cultural practices were followed to raise the crop. The data were recorded on days to heading and maturity, plant height, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, disease reaction and sterility (%) etc. Whole plot was harvested to record grain yield statistical analysis. .

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes showed wide range of variation for yield and other characters studied. Yield, date of heading, plant height, physical grain characteristics etc. were the most important selection criteria, so these were given first priority during selection. Performance of selected entries indicated that the most of the selected entries had similar or lower yield than Shatabdi. Days to heading of the selected entries were also similar to Shatabdi except E-12 which had the lowest DLA due to BpLB. Though, all the selected entries had lower 1000-grain weight than check, their filling was good. Percent diseased leaf area in some selected genotypes were higher than available existing best BpLB tolerant variety Shatabdi but those were in acceptable level. Considering all those factors sixteen genotypes E-101, E-90, E-121, E-91, E-30, E-271, E-221, E-330, E-251, E-50, E-190, E-170, E-241, E-81, E-194, and E-191 were finally selected for further evaluation in heat tolerant wheat yield trial in next year.
