A field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University to evaluate the effects of irrigation and planting density on dry matter production and yield of edible podded pea. The design of the experiment was split plot with 4 replications. Three irrigation shedules viz. (i) one irrigation at 25 days after emergence (DAE), (ii) two irrigations at 25 and 40 DAE and (iii) three irrigations at 25, 40 and 55 DAE were assigned in the main plots and three planting densities i.e. 20, 30 and 40 plants m2 were used in the sub plots. The results indicated that irrigation and planting density did not interact significantly. Application of three irrigations produced the highest dry matter of edible podded pea. But effect of the three planting densities on dry matter production of edible podded pea were identical. Regardless of irrigation and planting density, dry matter of leaf and stem of edible podded pea increased upto 75 DAE and then declined with corresponding increase in pod dry weight. Application of three irrigations produced 26% higher green pod yield and 56% higher seed yield over yield obtained from one irrigation. Planting density had no significant effect on green pod yield but the highest density contributed 23% higher seed yield than that of the lowest density of edible podded pea.

To evaluate the effects of frequency of irrigation and planting density on dry matter production and yield of edible podded pea.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh from November 1996 to March 1997. The soil was silty clay loam having pH 6.7 under Salna series of Madhupur Tract. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 4 m x 3 m. Three irrigation schedules viz. one irrigation at 25 days after emergence (DAB), two irrigations at 25 and 40 DAB and three irrigations at 25, 40 and 55 DAB were assigned to the main plots, while sub plots received three planting densities i.e. 20, 30 and 40 plants per m2. Row and plant spacings were 25 x 20 cm, 30 x 10 cm and 25 x 10 cm respectively, for the three planting densities. At the time of final land preparation 10 tons of cowdung and 20-26-33- 10 kg N, P, K and S per hectare were applied in the form of urea, triple supper phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. Seeds were soaked in water for an hour prior to sowing. Two seeds were sown per hill on 18 November 1996. After emergence, the crop was thinned to one seedling per hill to maintain the desired planting density. Irrigations were applied in accordance with the designed schedule and other intercultural operations and plant protection measures were taken whenever needed. Rainfall occured 16.17 mm in first ten days, 10.18 mm in second ten days and 6.61 mm in rest of February which considered as general effect. Starting 45 DAB, plants were sampled at 10 days intervals from an area of 1 m2 from each plot to determine the accumulation of dry matter in different plant parts. The plants were segmented into leaf, stem and pod (if any) and dried at 70°C for 72 hours and weighed. At maturity, five plants were harvested from each plot to record data on yield contributing characters. Green pod yield and grain yield of edible podded pea were recorded from an area of 4 m2. Data on different parameters were subjected to analysis of variance and the treatment means were compared by using least significant difference (LSD) test. There was no interaction effect of irrigations and planting density on any characters of edible podded pea. So the independent effect of irrigation and planting density has been discussed here.

From this study, it can be concluded that to maximize both green pod yield as well as seed yield in edible podded pea at least three irrigation at 25, 40 and 55 DAE are needed, and there is an opportunity of increasing planting density even higher than 40 plants per m2.
