A pot experiment was conducted with Barimung 2, a mungbean variety at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh to evaluate the role of benzylaminopurine (BAP) on water status, growth and yield of mungbean under water stress conditions, Water stress was imposed at first flowering by withholding irrigation till wilting and then watering was resumed again [maintaining 80% field capacity (FC) water]. BAP of different levels (20, 60 & 100 ppm) was applied at both 25 DAE (pre- stress) and first flowering (at stress imposition) to the water stressed treatments. Water stress reduced seed yield, whereas BAP increased seed yield by increasing relative exudation rate at a lower relative leaf water potential and relative water content at wilting. Pre-stress treatment with 100 ppm BAP produced the highest seed yield, which was identical to that of well-watered and pre-stress treatments.

To understand whether BAP at concentration lower than 100 ppm had any positive effect on water stress tolerance of munqbean.

A pot experiment was conducted with eight growth regulator treatments viz., W0B0 = No water stress + No benzylaminopurine (BAP), WsB0 = Water stress (WS) + No BAP, WsB100 = WS + 100 ppm BAP applied at 25 DAE (pre-stress), WsB(100) = WS + 100 ppm BAP applied at first flowering (at water stress imposition), WsB60 = WS + 60 ppm BAP applied at 25 DAE, WsB(60) = WS + 60 ppm BAP applied at first flowering, WsB20 = WS + 20 ppm BAP applied at 25 DAE, WsB(20) = WS + 20 ppm applied at first flowering to observe the effect of BAP on mungbean under water stress conditions. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design. Seeds were sown in plastic pots of 25 cm diameter X 30 cm in height. Each pot was filled with 12 kg air- dried soil, compost (1/4 th of the soil mass) and, 0.270, 0.600 and 0.348g/ pot urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash corresponding to 45- 100- 58 kg urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash per hectare, respectively. The compost and fertilizers were uniformly incorporated in the pot soil. The crop was grown in a plastic greenhouse constructed in the Agronomy Farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural Uniuversity, Salna, Gazipur. Water stress was imposed at first flowering by withholding irrigation and continued till appearance of wilting. Then re-watering was made with normal irrigation water (maintaining 80% of field capacity water) and allowed the plants to grow till maturity. Benzylaminopurine (BAP) of different levels was applied at both 25 DAE (pre- stress) and first flowering (at stress imposition). Data on dry matter of different plant parts at wilting and at harvest, leaf water potential, chlorophyll content, exudation rate, relative water content and plant height at wilting, yield and yield components were recorded. Leaf water potential was measured at 6:30 a.m. with the help' of Scholander Pressure Bomb apparatus. The third uppermost fully expanded leaf was cut carefully with sharp blade from 4 replicated plants of each treatment. The petiole of the cut leaf was set in the apparatus and pressure was given slowly. When the water came out through the cut end the pressure reading was recorded. Eight plants per treatment were sampled at harvest for recording dry matter, yield contributing characters and yield. The recorded data were analyzed by MSTAT program and the treatment means were compared by LSD test.

It may be concluded from the findings of this experiment that plants treated with low concentration of BAP maintained high sap flow from root to shoot and sustained turgidity at low ψleaf and RWC. Moreover, the application of BAP (concentrations varying form 100 to 20 ppm) increased shoot dry matter and also seed yield under water stress condition.
