An experiment conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from June to November 2000, evaluated the effect of storage conditions and storage durations of uprooted seedlings on the performance of transplant autumn rice (Oryza sativa) cv. Binashail. Five storage conditions such as in mud, in water, in sun, in shade, in shade with frequent watering and 4 storage duration (0, 24, 48 and 72 hours storage of seedlings) were included in the experiment. Best performance was exhibited by seedlings stored in mud followed by those stored in water, in shade with time to time watering, in shade and in sun and the difference was generally significant. Some decrease in the value of subsequent crop characters occurred with an increase in the period of storage from 0 to 72 hours. However the differences between treatments were not significant.

1. To determine the effect of storage conditions of uprooted seedlings on the performance of transplant autumn rice, cv. Binashail.

2. To evaluate the effect of storage duration of uprooted seedlings on subsequent field performance.

The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experimental plot was latitude 24º 75' N and longitude 90º 5' E at 18 m altitude as belongs to the Sonatola soil series under the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ 9). The soil is a silty loam with soil pH 5.6 to 7.3. The experiment was a split plot design assigning storage conditions as the main plots and storage duration as the subplots with four replications. The size of each plot was 4.0 m x 2.5 m. Spacing between replicates, main plots and subplots were 1.0 m, 0.5 m and 0.5 m, respectively. The treatments were as follows: A. seedling storage condition : 5 = i) In mud (S1) = Seedlings were III puddled field ii) In water (S2) = Seedlings were in pond iii) In sunlight (S3) = Seedlings were in dry field and there was no bamboo roof over seedlings. iv) In shade (S4) = Seedlings were in dry field and there was bamboo roof over seedlings. v) In shade with time to time watering (S5) = Seedlings were in dry field and there was bamboo roof over seedlings and periodic watering was done by a watering cane. B. Seedling storage duration after uprooting (hr) : 4 i) 0 (D1) ii) 24 (D2) iii) 48 (D3) iv) 72 (D4). A piece of high land (Nursery) was puddled with a plough, cleaned and levelled with a ladder. Sprouted seeds were sown in the nursery bed on 10 June 2000. The main field was prepared using a tractor-drawn disc plough followed by ploughing with a country plough and subsequent levelling by laddering. Urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate was applied at the rate of 86, 90, 30, 60 and 10 kg/ha respectively as recommended by BINA (Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture). The full dose of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate were all applied at the time of final land preparation. The urea was applied in three applications, 22 kg/ha at 10 DAT (Days After Transplanting), 42 kg/ha at 30 DAT and 22 kg/ha at 55 DAT. Rice seedlings were uprooted carefully from the nursery bed on 7, 8, 9 and 10 July 2000 and stored for the periods up to 72 hrs. The seedlings were transplanted on July 10, 2000, at the rate of 3 seedlings per hill and a spacing of 25 cm and 15 cm between the rows and hills respectively. Weeding was done twice with the help of sickle on 20 and 35 days after 35 and 55 days after transplanting. The crop was infested by rice stem borer (Scirpophoga incertuius) and mealy bug (Brerinia rehi) which were controlled by applying Diazinon (60 EC) at the rate of 16.08 kg /ha as recommended by BINA on 40 days after transplanting. Five hills from each plot were randomly selected, and uprooted seedlings were tagged before harvesting for recording of data on plant characters and yield components. The crop was harvested at full maturity on October 15, 2000. The yield of grains and straw were taken from the individual plots. After threshing, the grains and straw were dried plot wise in the sun and the weight was taken separately and then converted to per hectare. The data were analysed statistically and mean differences were determined by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Best performance was exhibited by seedlings stored in mud followed by those stored in water, in shade with time to time watering, in shade and in sun and the difference was generally significant. The results obtained suggested that uprooted seedlings of Binashail rice can be stored in mud and water up to 72 hours in case of emergency, and in the sun or under shade for 0 to 24 hours without any appreciable loss in grain yield.
