An experiment was conducted to study the effect of manuring and split application or nitrogen on the growth, yield and protein content or maize cv, Baranali. There were four manurial treatments and two split application or nitrogen. Manurig was placed in whole plot and split application or nitrogen in sub-plot. Inorganic fertilizer with higher doses of cowdung (M4 treatment) gave the best response for all the parameters. whereas only inorganic (M1 ) treatment gave the poorest response. Highest grain and stalk yield were obtained from M4 treatment. identically followed by M3 treatment. Grain and stalk protein content were higher in M4 treatment. Four split application of N gave higher grain yield and tended to increase nutrient content of gain and stalk over 3 split application of nitrogen. Results revealed that the application of cowdung at the rate of 10 and 15 t/ ha together with recommended inorganic fertilizers improved grain yield and quality over inorganic fertilizers alone and 4 split application of nitrogen increased grain yield and tended to improve grain quality of maize over 3 split application of nitrogen.

To study the effect of inorganic fertilizers alone and in combination with organic manure and split application of N on the growth, grain yield and quality of maize.

An experiment was conducted at the agronomy field laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, during the period form November 1995 to May 1996. The farm was situated at 24.75° N latitude 90.5° E longitude having sub-tropical climatic characteristics. The land, was a medium high belonging to the Old Brahrnaputra.Floodplain having non-calcareous dark grey flood plain soil. The soil pH was 6.94, total N 11%, available P 6.3 ppm exchangeable K 0.27meq/ 100g available S 13.7ppm. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications assigning fertilizer treatments to whole plots and split application of nitrogen to sub-plot at random. The fertilizer treatments used were : M1= inorganic fertilizer (IF) and no manure (control), M2= IF+ cowdung 5 t/ha, M3 = IF+cowdung 10 t/ha, M4 = IF + cowdung 15 t/ha and split application of nitrogen were: N1= 3 splits, N2 = 4 splits, Inorganic fertilizers were as per dose recommended by BARC at the rate of 270 kg Urea, 135 kg triple super phosphate, 85 kg muriate of potash, 120 kg gypsum and 15 kg zinc sulphate per hectare. The whole quantity of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and first dose of urea were applied in broadcast method at final land preparation. In 3 split application of N, the rest of urea was applied in two equal split after 35 and 52 days of sowing. In 4 split application of N, the rest of urea was applied in three equal splits after 35, 52 and 85 days of sowing. Cowdung was incorporated with the soil during final land preparation. The seeds were sown on 26 December, 1995 at a depth of 4-6 cm and 75 cm apart. There were four rows per plot. Within a row hills were spaced 25 cm apart and three seeds were sown per hill. A seed rate of 30 kg/ha was used. The crop was adequately protected from weeds, diseases and insect pests. Data on plant height, cob length, circumference of cob, number of grain per plant were recorded on crop of each plot at harvest. Grain and stalk yields were recorded after drying the grains and stalk of individual plot. Protein content of grain and stalk was determined by following the method as outlined by AOAC. All collected data were statistically analysed and the mean values were compared by using Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

The present study showed that application of organic manure in the form of cowdung at the rate of 10 to 15 t/ha in addition to recommended doses of inorganic fertilizers increased grain yield over inorganic fertilizers alone and that 4 split application of nitrogen (N2) was superior to 3 split application of nitrogen (N1) for higher grain yield and quality.
